Hugh Laurie moans about American pronunciations
Quote:
British actor Hugh Laurie drives his House castmates crazy by moaning about American pronunciations in the script. Laurie is forced to pronounce words like 'hygienic' and 'data' in a different way than his native English tongue.
He moans, "I haven't identified a single word that is pronounced the same in America as it is in England. And having to constantly listen to yourself and check your accent makes it harder to immerse yourself in the scene. It's as if you're playing left-handed. Or like everyone else is playing with a tennis racket and you have a salmon. I moan about it a lot."

I love Hugh Laurie!!! He does his American accent so well, I would have never guessed him from England, except I read GR every day

I love Hugh Laurie too!! He has such a delightful accent and it's too bad that it's disguised in House. His interview on Inside the Actor's Studio is definitely worth watching.

Re: Hugh Laurie moans about American pronunciations
I'd probably eyeroll at any other celebrity that said this, but he could tell me to go to hell and I'd think it was hot.

Re: Hugh Laurie moans about American pronunciations
i find it so funny that everyone thinks he's hot.......................dont get me wrong..........i love Hugh..................but i grew up watching him in roles such as these...........................

Prince George in Blackadder the third
Lord Monty in The young ones episode 'Bambi'

Lt. the Honorable George Colhurst St. Barleigh from Blackadder goes forth

Bertie Wooster from Jeeves and Wooster
A bit of fry and laurie
So to see him now as a middle aged stud muffin is most odd!

I can see what you all mean but to me its like fancying your geeky older brothers all grown up even geekier best friend. (Not that theres anything wrong with geeks!!)
He's definately aged very well though!

Re: Hugh Laurie moans about American pronunciations
If he says he can't really "immerse himself in the scene", can you just imagine if he actually could? That man kicks ass!

LOL, we have never been more confused, but then I doubt we've ever laughed as hard and much about total misunderstandings and situations that would put every sitcom to shame We'd be "Excuse me?" each time we didn't understand them, but the first few times they were like "Why, what did you do?" (took us a while before we knew what they were saying, LOL)
Never heard the words "what?", "huh?" so much. They had these quaint little shops where we, US tourists, were of course eager to do some "authentic" shopping. God, turned ourselves into a friggin' tourist attraction, because I have no idea what dialect some of those people were speaking. But we had loads of unexpected fun that way.

Re: Hugh Laurie moans about American pronunciations
I can't believe Hugh was on 'The Young One's...I loved that show. I used to watch it when they showed it late nite on MTV back in the mid-80's.
