Leto Diagnosed With Gout
Requiem For A Dream star Jared Leto has been diagnosed with gout after undergoing dramatic weight loss for a film role. The condition is a form of arthritis and causes sudden and excruciating pain, swelling, redness and stiffness in joints. Leto's representative confirms that the gout was "caused by the dramatic weight loss for a movie role." The condition is caused by the accumulation of uric acid crystals in the joints. The Panic Room actor packed on 62 pounds for his role as John Lennon's killer Mark David Chapman in Chapter 27. He was required to shift the weight quickly for subsequent roles.

i remember seeing him on the carson daly show a while back and him saying how stupid and unhealthy it is to gain and loose weight the way he did and that one shouldn't really do it. which i thought was a sensible thing to say but what did idiot carson daly say?! that oh it wasn't/isn't so bad that he's (jared) a professional and that all is good... well "kids" look who was right!

Ouch - MrAO has gout attacks because he has a naturally high level of uric acid in his blood. It's hereditary apparently. If you want to see a grown man cry then gout will do it. The folklore cause of gout is too much booze and high living but we worked out that in MrAO's case the trigger is after he eats strawberries, prawns or offal (or stress). He takes daily meds to keep it under control but get occasional acute attacks and it's absolute agony.

Gout is often associated with excessive drinking NOT yo yo dieting. There probably is a heredity component. I suppose if Jared did the strict Adkins thing the ketones produced might affect his kidneys. I thought we discussed in here how he did that lemonade cleanse. I tried doing that and it made me sick as a dog. One day drinking the stuff and I was puking copious amount of bile for 6 hours . Puked so hard , I broke a blood vessel in my eye. Don't recommend it folks!

NO - gout is a predisposition because you have naturally high levels of uric acid (hereditary/genetic) and certain things, booze, types of food tip the levels to the point you produce crystals in your joints, usually the big toe/bunion joint, and get the swelling and pain. If you get gout then the first thing to blame is your genes, not your lifestyle, although what you eat or drink can make ALL the difference.

Lemonade cleanse ... Master Cleanse?
I've read about that on one of my raw food forums. It always sounds so disgusting. I gag just reading about it ... I have no idea how folks can drink the stuff for days on end. Blech.

My Dad gets gout after he eats certain foods; like tomatoes, for one. He's not a drinker though. I'm worried that I'll get it, since my mother never shuts up about the fact that its hereditary, and I seem to have taken after him.

The funny thing about gaining weight is that even if you lose it, it's REAL easy to get it back again.
HAHA jared will be a future fatty.

i don't know enough about gout or any kind of arthritis but daniel johns (singer of silverchair) had a very bad form of arthritis after he was anorexic. even if it's not the main reason i do think it can have to do with food, what you eat or if you don't get enough nutrients or whatever.

we discussed this before in a different thread, when you lose weight too fast you can easily develop gallstones too, so take it slow

You can also get hiatual hernias and ulcers in different parts of the stomach. Very painful. AND it can damage your heart.

A simple blood test will show if you have high uric acid levels. It does not mean you will necessarily get gout but it's something to be aware of. The trigger for attacks is usually something you've eaten or drank and unfortunately it's trial and error working out what it was. For some reason strawberries, tomatoes, seafood are quite common but it could be almost anything. Attacks usually start with a slight stiffness in the ankle or big toe joint, then it feels like a bruise is developing and then the joint swells up and becomes EXTREMELY tender and painful. There are special anti-inflammatory meds you can take plus some hefty painkillers but it's better to spot the early warning signs and deal with it then. Gout is a bit of a 'joke' ailment but the pain is no joke at all - on one occasion MrAO (not a sook by any means) was weeping with pain.
