Default Two women in bar defend Mel Gibson

August 8, 2006 - 10:32AM

Two women who were downing beers with actor Mel Gibson before he was pulled over for drink driving in the US say he was not "an angry drunk saying anti-Jewish things" on the night he was arrested.

Julie Smith, 27, and Kimberley Lesak, 29, who have broken their silence about their meeting with the Hollywood star, say Gibson spent the night talking about his family, News Limited papers reported today.

Gibson has made headlines around the world after unleashing an anti-Jewish tirade when arrested for drunken driving after a night at Malibu's Moonshadows bar on July 28.

He was charged this week with two misdemeanour counts of driving under the influence of alcohol.

According to the two blondes, who were infamously photographed with Gibson in the bar, the actor was "just trying to be a normal guy" and spent the night talking about his wife Robyn, who he described as a "saint", and children.
"He floated around talking to everyone," Ms Lesak, from Kentucky, was quoted as saying, adding she had no idea the actor was an alcoholic.

"We now know he was over the legal limit - but at that point he was not stumbling drunk."

Ms Smith, who went to the bar to drown her sorrows with her friend after ending her engagement, said it really was a "Jekyll and Hyde transformation".

"He wasn't an angry drunk saying anti-Jewish things when we saw him," the San Diego woman said.

"He was being very friendly and you just kind of forgot he's this mega superstar."

Well, now they've just wasted their 15 minutes of fame on a drunken bigot.

'Broken their silence"? I suspect they were chomping at the bit from the first second to share this bit of news with the world and get their names out there.

Seriously! This was from Monday so it probably just took that long for the lawyers to vet the whole thing and the bartering to be done with.

Well, IMO, the pics that were published were of him and these girls w/ his arms around them. From what I understand there were other pics but these were the one deemed tabloid worthy. I am sure these two were chomping at the bit, I've seen them interviewed a few times already, but they probably would've gotton more $$$ and attention for saying he was lecherous and hitting on them.

You can have a family and still stay out late without them occasionally. I do it, and my hubby doesn't think I'm a pig.
