I'm told by a source intimate with his situation tonight that Mel Gibson "was really on the verge of suicide because he felt he was helpless to alcohol and didn't know what to do about it." Sure, my reaction was: sounds like spin. But the source here is someone I've known closely for years. Make your own judgment -- here's the rest of what he told me about Gibson (mugshot left): "That's why he was driving around 90 miles an hour. This was a death wish. If that cop hadn't stopped him, this guy was going to be wrapped around a pole. This is such a bigger issue than 'Will he work again?' This is about his not wanting to live anymore. I've seen what he's gone through and what he's going through. You have to understand the disease of alcoholism. He was back in it. There's no doubt in my mind he was trying to kill himself that night." As for his anti-Semitic slurs during his DUI arrest, I'm told that Gibson doesn't remember saying them. "Why? He had alcoholic blackout syndrome. I don't know a lot about it. I've not had a lot of experience with it. He has some recollection of parts of the evenings. But he's not denying he said those things, and if anything he's owning up to it. But nobody could verify it. Not even he or his lawyers have seen the police report yet." The insider called Gibson's situation "tragic. It's not about what people are focusing on, understand that. 'This is Mel Gibson. He can do whatever he wants. He has all the money in world. He has a wonderful family. He has a wonderful wife.' They're not thinking about the real issue here: alcoholism. Nobody is talking about his alcoholism." Presently, I'm told Gibson is in a non-residential alcohol recovery program in the Malibu area.

Re: Mel Gibson supposedly 'suicidal' when arrested
Actually, people are. I was skimming another site and they were DEFENDING old Mel, saying that what he said was taken out of context. Unbelieveable.

^^^ We seem to have someone defending him over here, too. Alcoholism shouldn't be an excuse for racist/sexist rants...

Re: Mel Gibson supposedly 'suicidal' when arrested
I'm curious to see how this all shakes out. If, notice I said 'if', this is true then he is one sick motherhumper with self fulfilling failure issues who fell apart in public. But I seriously doubt it with Mel being Pope Mel because if he's Mr. Super Catholic then he'd rather lick toilet seats than contemplate suicide and seperation for all eternity from who he understands God to be. Sounds spinnish to me, but then again it could be true. Going to watch from the fence until he slips up and reveals what exactly that was.

Re: Mel Gibson supposedly 'suicidal' when arrested
well he isnt that serious about anything really.. a NON-residential REHAB?.. yeah right.. ive known weekend/weeknight jailies... they get out for work.. (and get wasted) then come to jail sleep it off.. mel is pulling the opposite .. going to rehab.. getting out.. getting smashed still going to sleep it off at home.. then back to "looking like he wants the rehab thing"
and seriously .. he has enough money to rent a cabin or someting and pay a nurse and doctor to safely dry him out.. and then start on educating himself about RECOVERY ..

Re: Mel Gibson supposedly 'suicidal' when arrested
Like I said on another thread, I want one of his seven kids to come home with the child of a rabbie, convert to Judaism and send old Mel to his grave.

Mel Gibson supposedly 'suicidal' when arrested

I personally find this very sad. Heart-breaking in fact. I've been there. I had an addiction (not to alcohol) that got so out of control, i ABSOLUTELY "wanted out" and would consider suicide as an option. (Sorry to be so frigging depressing. ) People that have not been to the depths of major addiction, will never understand how it is to be so far down in the "big, black, abyss" that you can't even fathom EVER getting out...There are no words for the horrors...It seems there's no way out. I sure do hope he gets help & gets his life back. Even though my very best friend was killed by a drunk driver( ) and i am vehemently opposed to & disgusted by drunk drivers, this really is, in my opinion, a very sad situation. Thank God no one was hurt.

Good Point about his religious values and how they might affect any decison about 'suicide'..I had kinda forgotten about extreme Catholicism and suicide until you brought it up..does make me even more suspicious about this now.

Re: Mel Gibson supposedly 'suicidal' when arrested
I would think there could be some religious justification in trying to commit suicide like that, because it's more taking your chance at death than actively trying. I could believe he was suicidal due to addiction issues. My father-in-law fell off the wagon, and a few years later put a bullet through the back of his head.
However, I don't buy the excuse that blacking out is an excuse for saying stuff like that. When I drink, I lose my want to self-censor, but I don't generally say stuff I don't think, anyway, when I am sober.
