LOS ANGELES, California (CNN) -- Actor and director Mel Gibson was arrested Friday in Malibu, California, and charged with driving under the influence, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Office.
Gibson, 50, was pulled over early Friday while driving on the Pacific Coast Highway, said sheriff's spokesman Steve Whitmore. Officers on patrol reported Gibson was driving at an "excessively fast speed," he said.
He was charged with a misdemeanor and posted $5,000 bond, Whitmore said.
Gibson was not immediately available for comment.
Gibson, who acted in the "Lethal Weapon" movie series, won an Oscar for directing 1995's Oscar-winning best picture "Braveheart."
He reportedly financed the controversial movie "The Passion of the Christ" (2004), which he also directed, with $25 million of his own money. The film made $370 million at the domestic box office and currently ranks No. 10 on the all-time box office list. "Passion of the Christ" was nominated for three Oscars, but won none.
Gibson's latest movie, "Apocalypto," set in the Mayan civilization of several centuries ago, is due in December.
CNN's Albert Lewitinn contributed to this report.

Had a little too much Jesus Juice, there. Maybe the hair transplant addled his brain a little.

$5000.00 bail? Wow! I got a DUI three years ago (not something I'm proud of) I didn't have to pay anything! They just made me breathe in the straw, fill out some paperwork and then they sent me on my not so merry way!
I think all in all I spent about $800.00 in fines and fees.
Mine was low. I blew under .08 (2 glasses of wine with dinner) but AZ has zero tolerance. Maybe Mel had more booze in him.

That sucks. That could happen to anybody. Do you mean that you can't have ANY alcohol in your system in Arizona? Curious.

Pretty much. I got pulled over because I swerved while answering my cell phone. Since I had alchohol in my system I was considered impaired.
The worst part of the experience was the 24 hours I spent in SHERIFF JOE ARPAIO'S TENT CITY JAIL. It's a pretty inhumane and dangerous place. The prisoners in Guantanamo have it better.

I was reading about this guy the other day! How awful for you. Well, I hope you've mended your criminal ways.

Most definitely!
The odd part was in the so called counseling classes they pretty much teach you how to get away with all kinds of real crimes.

He's always had a drinking problem, it's well documented. He's a hypocrite, pure and simple: Do as I say, not as I do. Ugh.
