(BANG) -
Will Smith marched against violence in his hometown of Philadelphia at the weekend.
The '
Men In Black' actor joined 600 campaigners to protest against crime in the city, which this year has already seen 220 homicides, on Saturday (22.07.06).
He said: "We're going to take this walk, and hopefully draw a little attention to the problem."
The event was part of
Charlie Mack's Party 4 Peace annual
Celebrity Weekend, organised by Smith's long-time friend and Philadelphia native
Charles Alston.
The actor-and-rapper, accompanied by his wife
Jada Pinkett Smith, led the group, including local officials and members of the community, through one of the city's most violent districts.
Smith, whose own foundation financed a large majority of the weekend, told the crowd it was important to be surrounded by positive influences.
He said: "Your life is going to be a reflection of the five people that you spend the most time with. It's who you are.
"It you don't want it to be these five people then you've got to hang out with new people. We will rise and fall based upon the people that you have around you."
Last week, violence in the city increased to such a level, the
Philadelphia Daily News newspaper campaigned for the
National Guard to patrol the streets.
