It's the end of the world for football's party girls as FA bans them from tournaments

The England football team's army of wives and girlfriends has been banned from attending future tournaments after their behaviour at the World Cup.

The Wags' endless shopping and bitter spats during their stay in Germany have infuriated Football Association executives smarting over the team's lacklustre performance.




Senior FA sources have told The Mail on Sunday that nightly bulletins about the Wags' partying were seen as a major distraction for the footballers.

There were also reports that players were plagued by late-night phone calls from their inebriated partners, who spent most evenings knocking back cocktails and champagne at local bars in Baden-Baden.

Some younger Wags were overheard calling their boyfriends as late as 4am, despite former coach Sven-Goran Eriksson's strict rules about bedtime for his men: 10.30pm on match days, midnight at other times.

Now new England manager Steve McClaren is understood to want an end to the controversial Wag phenomenon.

The former Middlesbrough manager has begun his reign as England boss by telling the FA he wants players' wives, girlfriends and family members to keep a much lower profile in future tournaments.

McClaren discussed the women's behaviour with FA chief executive Brian Barwick in London last week.

A source close to Soho Square said: 'The support of people closest to the players will not be discouraged but he would rather a similar situation did not occur again. The photographs and headlines were regrettable.'

The raucous antics of the Wags - a phrase first coined by The Mail on Sunday in May - in the sleepy town of Baden-Baden were received with disquiet in some quarters.

But the women - including Wayne Rooney's fiancee Coleen McLoughlin and Frank Lampard's fiancee Elen Rives - continued partying regardless.

Eriksson's decision to let them be present for the whole tournament has been fiercely criticised - they stayed at five-star Brenner's Park Hotel, just 20 miles from the team's mountainside retreat and were allowed to spend the day with players after matches.

But now Eriksson has gone - along with girlfriend and founder Wag, Nancy Dell'Olio - the new regime will focus more on football than fashion.

Sir Bobby Robson, who took England to the semi-finals at Italia '90, says he supports any move to stop the Wags travelling with England.

He said: 'The Wag thing in Germany was over-the-top. You need the players to concentrate, not be worrying about their wives and girlfriends.'

The ban will be a huge blow to the women, who are expected to earn more than £5million on the back of their high-profile World Cup holiday, which turned many into overnight celebrities.

From book and magazine deals to modelling contracts, the Wags are understood to have been inundated with offers.

Last night, the women were reluctant to comment about the ban.

But Lisa Roughead, girlfriend of midfielder Michael Carrick, said: 'I struggled to get time off work anyway, so never mind.'

A spokesman for John Terry's Toni Poole, who gave birth to twins shortly before the World Cup, said: 'Toni didn't go out once. It was pretty evident that she was not part of all that. Draw your own conclusions from that.'
