    Shields missed out on childhood

Friday, July 7 2006, 11:50 BST - by Susanna Regan

Brooke Shields has spoken about her dismay at the fact that she never got a chance to be a normal child.

The actress and former child model claims that her career meant that she developed a strongly sexual public image when she was too young to understand the implications.

"I don't think I ever really was a 'child' child. I was made into a sort of icon of sexuality, simultaneously thought of as the virgin, which I was, yet always on the cover of Vogue looking sexual and much older. The object of affection and fantasy," she revealed to Contactmusic.

Yet the star also made sure that she maintained her own sense of identity and did things on her terms. She added: "I remember my defiance - not letting the system get the better of me and playing whatever role I needed to play to survive on my terms."

It's amazing that she is just now speaking out about this. She had such paradoxical early career. For some unknown reason, she managed to maintain a fairly wholesome, appealing image, in spite of playing sexually active roles (Pretty Baby, Blue Lagoon, Endless Love). Not to mention those Calvin Klein advertisements, where she boldly implied that she wore no undies.

I have always wondered what kind of an effect this had on her. Her mother pimped her out, plain & simple.

Isnt it strange how she doesnt claim that having no childhood makes her want to wear pyjamas all day have water fights and sleepovers and watch endless disney movies with little kids. When is the plastic surgery to remove her face gonna start?

Yeah, I remember her being the poster child for virginity way before Jessica Simspon or Britney. And she kept that image up even though she had lost her virginity to TVís Superman, Dean Cain, while they were both attending Princeton University.

Yes, who can forget that memorable tagline, "Want to know what gets between me and my Calvins? Nothing." Or something like that. Idk. It was so long ago.

Didn't Brooke and her mom fight for years due to that?

She was the most gorgeous child, but I agree her mother pimped her ass out. I would be very resentfu for that as well. Good for her tho for never being in rehab etc, I could see how easy it would be for her to have turned to alcohol/drugs.

Agree - she could've said something sooner, even 5 or 10 years ago, but why now? Her f-ed up relationship with her mother - who's apparently a control freak - probably had/has her feeling guilty about speaking up.

I always look at the driver behind a behavior. Maybe being a mom for a 2nd time, she's doing a lot of soul searching about her own fitness as a mom and not wanting to screw up her daughters' lives.

I agree that's probably her motivation. But I still remember hearing that her mom was actually fiercely protective of her, and wouldn't let her be put in compromising situations (I assume casting couch scenarios or other Hollywood pervs taking advantage of her.) Hence her actually being a virgin and living up to her wholesome image.

But it is a little disturbing how sexualized her image was at such a young age, and that was totally her mother's doing. I could NOT BELIEVE she put her in Pretty Baby!!!--that was so child porn!

It's amazing she didn't turn into a Britney Spears. The big difference is, Brooke seems to have intelligence and common sense.

About Pretty Baby, I only recently saw it, & can't imagine that such a movie could be made today. This child was shown completely naked in sexual contexts, and a good percentage of her lines were sexually oriented. In one scene, she tried to goad another child into having sex with her. She ended up, at the age of 12, marrying an adult male character. We've all seen Endless Love & Blue Lagoon, which were both about sexual relationships between, what, kids? teenagers? Whatever they were.

But I still remember hearing that her mom was actually fiercely protective of her, and wouldn't let her be put in compromising situations
I beg to disagree with Ms. Teri Shields here, if she ever said that. She obviously did not view pseudo-child porn as compromising. The average American doesn't know what goes on behind the scenes on the proverbial casting couch, so I don't think Brooke's protection from it quite explains her perpetual virginal image.
