But I digress. . . .

Legal obligations in a case such as yours are a non-issue, when one does the decent thing and returns the ring. You did the decent thing--albeit a bit latently, but the right thing just the same.

It sounds like she gave it back to him when they split and it is just being reported on now--possibly taken from her Vanity Fair interview. I never liked her, but she's been so mature and dignified about her recent suffering (Lance and cancer) that I am now officially impressed.

it may have been the breast cancer that has taken her so bloody long to get the ring back to him.. she has stated she didnt want to see him.. it would be too hard.. and a "big old honking ring" like that .. needs to be returned in person.. LOL

I agree with you. Maybe I missed it but why did they officially break up? Was he cheating on her?

She did the correct thing etiquette-wise, and more importantly, she did the decent thing. If Lance was cheating on her or otherwise being a jerk, it might have been awfully tempting to auction that big old honking ring on Ebay to the highest bidder. Also, it sounds like she returned the ring to Lance at the time of their break-up, and is just now mentioning it, not that it's anybody's business.

Has anyone heard why they split? Lance is reportedly still hung up on her. My theory is that she called it off, after her diagnosis, because she didn't want to put Cancer survivor Lance through anymore turmoil. By the way, here's the link to SC's offical website.

They broke up before she was diagnosed with cancer. As for ring etiquette, if she was poor, then she probably would have kept it and sold it on ebay. But since she does not need the money and the ring represents sadness she is better off gving it back.

"Etiquette" dictates that if the woman calls it off, she returns the ring.

If the man calls it off, woman gets to keep the ring.

If Lance was cheating on her, I don't know why she returned it. Although I guess I probably would have too, because even if I sold it, I wouldn't want his "cheat / affair money" to buy me anything else!
