Kate Beckinsale appauled by US World Cup coverage
Kate Beckinsale Appalled By Us World Cup Coverage
by WENN
Jun 26, 2006
UNDERWORLD star KATE BECKINSALE is appalled by the lack of coverage the FIFA World Cup gets in the US, and is especially insulted by the bias of the American sports commentators.
The actress was working in New York City and decided to catch an international soccer match on TV at a local pub.
She explains, "The World Cup is very exciting. It's all we've got (in England). I mean that's it - it really is.
"We went here and watched it in a pub and I was expecting a huge crowd and there were like five people.
"Me, my daughter, my husband. ANNE HATHAWAY was there for some reason, I have no idea why.
"In fact, you hear the American commentary, which is a big shocker for us, and they're obviously rooting for which ever other team it is (playing England).
"It's terrible! (They're like) 'It was an OK goal for England, but not that great!' It's upsetting!"

So it's not a big deal in America ... hardly the end of the world. Is the Superbowl a big deal in England?

There's a BIG difference between the Superbowl, which is only between American teams and is more an American sport, than the World Cup which is a global event (teams from allove the world- North America, South America, Europe, Asia, Australia) and soccer (or football how it's called in the rest of the world) is a sport played all over the world! After the Olympics, it's the biggest sporting event in the world. So it's a pretty big deal. It's just really surprising to someone from abroad to see the US not at all interested in the WC not that Kate meant it was like the end of the world. "Appauled" is a pretty strong word though... The reason why it's not popular among Americans is that the American team isn't that good and it's a fairly new thing in the US compared to football, basketball, baseball, hockey. And I have to say that the commentators are sometimes biased too.

So you complain that it's not a big deal in America, and then make a snotty-ass comment about an AMERICAN watching it? Good Lord...

Re: Kate Beckinsale appauled by US World Cup coverage
I have to admit, I agree with her on the commentators. I haven't been watching the coverage, but on my local news station the two commentators were chatting about soccer and about how they didn't understand the rules and that (American) football was so much more advanced. That kinda' shit just fires me up - talk about displaying your ignorance to the community! If they don't know anything about the sport (and I don't necessarily think they need to. It's a local station and they do all the news/sports/interviews/commentary etc. They can't know it all ...) but if you don't understand it then STFU! Don't make yourself look like an ass.

Re: Kate Beckinsale appauled by US World Cup coverage
What the hell is she so 'appalled' about. She was surprised there were only five people in the 'pub'? Well that just shows how ignorant she is about the level of concern here about this event. Don't like the coverage here then watch some international cable channel or GTFO! Yes we still don't like the metric system and love our American football. So what? They are our traditions and if you don't like it don't come here and bitch about it. Especially if you are a no-talent skank.

Re: Kate Beckinsale appauled by US World Cup coverage
The games are also played in real time so the reason only 5 people were watching in the sports bar was probably because they were at work - I've had to tape the few games I wanted to watch because I have a job. Anyway - England will lose to Portugal so boo hoo.

Re: Kate Beckinsale appauled by US World Cup coverage
She's right about the commentators, they do not like England. It shocks me how it's the biggest sport in the world, yet it hasn't picked up in North America. More & likely it is cuz they didn't pick up on it & perfect it first. Shocked - not appalled. People have jobs & can't sit in pubs all day.

Re: Kate Beckinsale appauled by US World Cup coverage
OK, so the coverage sucks, fine. But 'appalled'? I wonder what word she uses for 'appalling' things like murder, rape and Paris Hilton?

Plenty of people in the pubs here in the South watching it. I've watched it on the projection screen at my gym off and on, since they always have/had it on when I'm in the cardio room. I think Kate Becksindale needs to move back to the UK, but then again she'd probably find something to bitch about there. She seems like a generally negative person.

Re: Kate Beckinsale appauled by US World Cup coverage
I have watched the world cup in Europe and don't remember the show having any commentators. Turn off the sound if that is the issue.
Was watching the Brazil game earlier today. We hick Americans just don't live up to her standards.
