Actress and United Nations (UN) goodwill ambassador ANGELINA JOLIE is amazed the US government can spend so much money funding the war in Iraq and so little on humanitarian causes in Africa.
The 31-year-old wishes America would reassess its foreign policy priorities.
She tells CNN, "The amount of money being spent on war and then the amount of money not being spent on preventing wars in developing countries.
"Our priorities are quite strange. We're missing a lot of opportunities to do good things that Americans have a history of doing."

Well, she has a point. Prevention is always preferable.

What she says is true but this is an opinion that has been stated by numerous people from politicians, celebritities to the "normal" folk. I agree with her but if she wants to make the change, run for a position in government. Make the change happen.

But like I said in another thread, How in the hell do you stop it let alone prevent it? How is money going to solve this issue? You have people out there who just don't give a damn about others. They are ruthless and will do anything to anyone to get what they want and that is power and control over people. If this could be solved, there wouldn't be anymore wars but until everyone is on the same page, I don't see it happening, at least, sadly, not in our lifetime.

Angelina Jolie: "More needs to be spent on preventing wars".
Ummmm, yeahhhh, ya think??!!? Hmmm, yeahhhhh , i have to say, preventing wars would be....hmmm .....a GREAT THING TO DO!!!!! What a BRILLIANT idea! Let's get right on that!!!
--Please excuse my sarcasm. It actually has nothing to do with Angelina. My family just got word that my cousin (love you so much Adam!!!) has to go to Iraq for his 4th (yes, FOURTH) tour of duty there. I am beyond devastated, and very bitter. For his three previous stints over there, we all waited with baited breath; our hearts would skip a beat every time we would hear of a U.S. Marine being killed over there...And when he came home this January, we cried tears of joy, thought it was for good this time, and we all thanked God. Now, the horror, agony, anxiety, & fear of losing him is beginning all over again, and i feel like i can't stand it....I am so angry about this war, and feel so helpless. I already lost one friend over there. (Randy Rosenberg , RIP, you brave awesome guy )
Sorry to go off-topic...As you can see, war is on my mind. (I could talk all day on the subject...)

Allegedly fed up with Hollywood trappings, Beverly Hillbilly Britney Spears is turning her back on the paparazzi, Kabbalah and — as we saw in last week's Matt Lauer interview — handlers, stylists and self-respect.
But like us regular folk, she’s still entranced with celebrity It Couple Brangelina. According to a quickly quashed rumor, Britney had been considering Namibia, the obscure African It Baby birthplace, as spawning ground for Federletus II.
OK, a publicist suddenly appeared to deny Britney said any such thing. But c’mon! The Namibia idea is just the sort of hokum that would come out of Britney’s gum-smacking mouth. She’s a follower. She was a Mouseketeer, remember. She followed Madonna into Kabbalah before dumping it to declare baby Sean Preston her religion. No wonder she digs Brangelina’s Rough Guide to Celebrity Child Birth. Apparently, Brangelina’s religion is their baby, too. They did name the kid New Messiah, at least according to one sketchy translation for Shiloh Nouvel.

I saw a clip of this interview, and the first thing my boyfriend said was "wow she is such a bad speaker". So true.
I didn't realize how huge her lips really were, I couldn't focus on her cause of them......ewwww.....Good for her though.

I believe her point is that if we helped by feeding the starving and getting them medical care then maybe they would not become so disenchanted. Education is very necessary in the 3rd world countries too. Most wars are started because a group/class of people feel oppressed.

And it is a really noble point but if you have people who prevent food getting there, medical care getting there, how is it going to happen? You could educate all you want but IMO, there is always going to be a group of people out there who are going to stir shit up. There have been many examples, in some cases, how people get educated and the next thing you now, they are bitting the hand that helped. Which I believe is the problem the US is facing now.

I think she's talking about helping farmers and refugees, not terrorists and war leaders

Looking at Africa, they unfortunately go hand in hand. The War Lords keep all these great thing from happening. How do you stop that?

Well, you can provide people with a means to live so they aren't starving...be that a water pump to irrigate their fields or a goat.
Literacy rates are inversely correlated with the amount of children a woman has.
The warlords are there because in most cases they're the only form of "politics" that is around. There's no system, no checks. And that comes from a country which is in disarray because people are worried about their next meal, where they're going to sleep tonight and which family member is going to die tommorow. How do you see beyond a week in a situation like that?
I mean it was only in the 1980s that apartheid started disappearing, and even in the late 90s black people couldn't vote, Africa's still a baby when it comes to a developing country.
It's about giving a future that doesn't involve war, and it's doable, though daunting. But just because it's daunting doesn't mean we shouldn't try. What's the point of anything then?

SVZ - I bow down before you. You just articulated it beautifully.
Gold Dust - my thoughts and prayers are with your family. My little brother just returned from his 4th tour. I am with you on the holding your breath everytime time you hear that another American has been killed. Then when you hear that it is not your loved one you feel a sense or euporia for a split second. It then quickly turns to immense sadness at knowing another family's greatest fear has come true.

Thanks, SVZ. You are right. We shouldn't stop trying. I just wish it wouldn't take so long. It makes me sad to think how bad those people have it.
