Does Dunst a deserve a dunce cap?
01/06/2006 12:00:00 AM (KP International) Kirsten Dunst has recently blamed her lack of knowledge about French history on the US school system.
Dunst, who stars as the famous Queen of France Marie Antoinette in Sofia Coppola's upcoming film of the same name, knew hardly anything about her character because, she says, subjects outside American borders seemed to get brushed over in highschool history classes.
"If you grow up in France, you learn about French history, and if you grow up in America the French history is a smaller paragraph in your textbook," said 24-year-old. "So I didn't know an enormous amount about Marie Antoinette except for the fact that she didn't say 'Let them eat cake' and was beheaded. That was pretty much what I'd learned in school."
The film was met with boos and lukewarm reviews at its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival.
'Marie Antoinette,' costarring Jason Schwartzman ('Shopgirl,' 'Rushmore'), 'SNL' alum Molly Shannon and Keira Knightley's exboyfriend Jamie Dornan, is set to hit theatres in the fall.

If I were an actor, I'd study about the person I'm going to be playing...

is she serious? how can she expect french history to be taught to the same degree that american history is taught in american schools? i'm sure she got the basics we all got. it's not the school system's fault she chose not go to college and take an additional class or two on the subject.

What's wrong with reading a book?
I read that Marie Antoinette biography by Antonia Fraser and it's a good read, not difficult and not too many long words, so maybe Kristen could have managed it.

Perhaps she could become a UN ambassador and then she too could be omnipotent - and perhaps we could send her to France forever....

Re: Kirsten Dunst blames US school system for her lack of knowledge
fuck her. i teach history. WORLD history, to be precise - and i barely mention US history because the STATE standards set it up that way. just because she didn't go to school whatever year world history was required for her doesn't mean it's the school's fault. pick up a book, don't blame teachers and schools, bitch.

It's called self-education, Kirsten. Try it sometime.

These comments just put her in my "Paris Hilton Dumb" category. What an idiot. Pick up a damn book for Pete's sake...go to France and study...stay there

Re: Kirsten Dunst blames US school system for her lack of knowledge
All school does is give the basics so what is she whining about? I absolutely agree that self-education is the way to go. You're interested in a subject? Buy a book or go to the library. She really has become wildly annoying.

Re: Kirsten Dunst blames US school system for her lack of knowledge
it's true she could have read a book if she was so interested, but maybe she does have a point that some schools at least focus only on US history and skim over everything else? high school should provide you with a bit more than just the very basics, you should also graduate with a bit of general culture.
if i was a parent i'd be pissed off if my kids graduated high school and only studied history of one country. i had to spend almost as much time on rome and greece, the egyptians, US history, etc., as i did on european history in general.

I remember everyone having to take World History while in high school...i thought that was pretty standard.
