Matt Stone and Trey Parker attack Comedy Central
SOUTH PARK creators MATT STONE and TREY PARKER have used the latest episode of the animated comedy to attack Comedy Central - because the network banned the use of an image of the PROPHET MUHAMMAD in an episode. Last Wednesday's (12APR06) show instead featured an image of JESUS CHRIST defecating on US President GEORGE W BUSH and the US flag. The episode also featured character KYLE trying to convince a Fox Network official to show an episode of FAMILY GUY with an image of the Prophet Muhammad in it. Kyle tells the network, "Either it's all okay, or none of it is. Do the right thing." In the episode the Fox officials decided to show the image, but a caption is displayed, reading "Comedy Central have refused to broadcast an image of Muhammad on their network." The ban comes after a Danish publication published caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad. Comedy Central are standing by their decision, saying, "In light of recent world events, we feel we made the right decision."

I can't believe they give into Scientology and Muslims.

Shame on Comedy Central! Why is ok to have Jesus but not Mohammed?
They are just afraid that some crazy Muslim will blow them up if they air it, or issue some fatwah or something.

Well, Jesus is different because there are lots of images of him and it's completely ok according to Christianity to represent him in physical form. In Islam, though, it is very sacreligious to represent Mohammed in any way, shape, or form. It is strictly forbidden. And most Muslims simply want this very important part of their religion to be respected.
But given the unstable climate of strained relations between some Middle-Eastern countries and the Western powers, this so-called conflict between Christianity and Islam, and the on going war in Iraq, the nuclear crisis in Iran...well, the pictures of Mohammed basically acted like a trigger to set of all these violent protests in a climate that was just waiting for a trigger. The protests were really horrible and stupid but they caused a lot of suffering. I don't see anything wrong with wanting to avoid that at this time and prevent anymore suffering that may be caused. The right to free speech does not protect your right to yell fire in a movie theatre where there is no fire.
This is a really contentious topic on which I'm sure people have very strong views. So if people do respond, let's try to stay respectful, pretty please.

Re: Matt Stone and Trey Parker attack Comedy Central
I daresay that plenty o'christians find it sacrilegious to portray Jesus in this way but they weren't consulted. Why are their feelings less important?
I love South Park, and I don't get offended by their portrayals of Jesus, but I could possibly be in the minority. I'm just playing devil's advocate, here.
If you're going to spoof religions, don't be chicken shit (boy, that fried chicken thread is spilling over) about it. If you feel free to offend one group, why protect another? If you're going to respect the sensibilities of one religion, why stomp on those of another?
I don't know where you got that picture, A*O, but it's priceless.

Oh Puh-leeze!! Comparing Muslim Fanaticism with yelling fire in a crowded theatre is ridiculous. And I am staying respectful by NOT posting the Mohammed with a bomb in head pic..which I was very tempted to post. Your or others religious sensibilities do not come before others rights of free speech. yelling fire in a crowded theatre is a safety issue..portraying Mohammed is nothing more than possibly offending someone...big difference. And the people who 'offend' someone's religious sensibilities are in NO WAY RESPONSIBLE for any resultant act of insanity, destruction, or hatred perpetrated by those who were 'offended'-the 'offended' are completely responsible for their own actions!

Re: Matt Stone and Trey Parker attack Comedy Central
^^ Ditto, Sojiita. I'm a Christian and pretty much hate South Park not because it offends my religious sensibilities but because I don't like that kind of artwork, and the poo-poo jokes get old. But hey, it's a free country.
(Or did we forget that?)
Anyway, I've lost all respect (little as it was) for Comedy Central and its ilk. Selectively kow-towing to one group while dissing another is not a pillar for the freedom by which this country is supported. Our US constitution makes mention of one God but doesn't say we have to believe in one; it does require that to live here, we have to believe in ONE NATION. I am sick of the "fashionable" and convenient trashing of our country that has given rise to a perversion of our laws and abuse of our way-too-decent nature as people.
If we want be able to freely express our thoughts and opinions, we must be willing to allow others to do it too. We can't have it both ways. I know we dislike making tough decisions, but in this case, we do have to choose - all or nothing. And if we don't like the privilege of having to decide, we can always go live somewhere else, where there are others who are more than willing to do it for us.
Frankly, I like it here. And I love our GossipRocks forum.
