Matthew: “I know I’m sexy”
Failure To Launch star Matthew McConaughey tells NW why he deserves his ‘sexiest man alive’ status.
So, you’re the Sexiest Man Alive according to one US magazine...
Yes, I am – I like it! But my mom has to take the credit for the good genes. She said to me, “It's about damn time!”.
What did your friends say back home?
[Laughs.] I got some funny calls. Guys just basically saying quotes from the [magazine] and making rhymes with sexiest man alive, all that kind of stuff on my answering machine.
What about more superficial qualities? Are you into skinny or voluptuous women?
Well, I'll tell you this, I've seen a lot of people that may not be cover models that are sexier than some that do have this “perfect body”, just because of the way they wear it. You can see a woman who weighs 100 kilos but the way they wear their body is sexy. And then other people may have what some people would regard as “the perfect body” but it's only perfect piece by piece. They get up to move and you see it's just a bunch of parts and it's not all connected. There's nothing sexy about that. In a snapshot maybe it is, but movement is sexy.
What's your approach to love these days?
It's still romantic, it's just more practical. More realistic, in the means of, “I'm an independent man.” The woman that I'm with, or any woman that I'm with now, is probably going to be an individual woman.
What's important to keep a relationship healthy?
I think you should let the other person know early on in a relationship what you can and can't do. Otherwise you're setting yourself up for doom because that person will say, “Well, what about how you said you'd do … ” A lot of people can't live up to the honeymoon period. You've got to keep it real.
You've been travelling around in a trailer - Is it very hi-tech?
No. It's not very hi-tech but it's got running water if I have a place to hook up and it’s got a stove you can cook on or build a fire, so it has everything you need. And it's very relaxing and highly luxurious because if you want a new front yard every morning, you want a new view over a new river over a new ocean, you can get it. Where do you want to stop tonight? We can stop there or go and dry dock next to a train track in the middle of a desert and you got a train that's going by your head twice through the night. That's cool.
Don’t people swamp you in caravan parks?
No, it's not a swamping culture. Travellers are not really people that. If the door is shut I want my privacy. It's pretty simple.
Apparently you had a crush on your Failure To Launch co-star Sarah Jessica Parker when you were young?
Yes, I did! And now I know her – she's a great lady.
After shooting a sailing scene with you she said that you like to be in charge...
Well, if you're on my boat there's only one captain, but I'm not a great sailor. [Laughs.] But [my character in the movie]
Tripp looks like a great sailor. So that was fun.
You look like you're in the best shape of your life...
I mean, look good, feel good. I like to feel good and when I feel good I know I look good.
In the movie you play a 35-year-old who refuses to move out of his parents’ house. What would your advice be to guys like that?
Good luck, man. Mom and dad love them there. Some of them don't want to leave, some of them do it for economic reasons – they don't have money to get the rent paid, the food paid and they have their clothes laundered and folded. It's a heck of a deal, if you can get away with it. [But] that lifestyle wasn't for me. As soon as I finished high school I was out of there!
