Tom Cruise gives gift of music to help Katie with silent birth

Is Tom Cruise trying to make Katie Holmes more comfortable during her allegedly noise- and painkiller-free delivery by offering her ditties instead of epidurals? In a story we urge you to take with a boulder of salt, the London Sun says the grin-happy daddy-to-be has given his glassy-eyed fiancée, who's due to blow any second now, the gift of music to help her through the birth.

"Tom gave Katie an iPod loaded with 300 of her favorite songs," a "source close to them" tells the tabloid. "He wants her to listen to calming music -- but to use earphones so there's no noise in the delivery room."
There's no word on what tunes are on the purported player, although it's a good bet "I Wanna Be Sedated" didn't make the cut. (Do you have a song suggestion for Katie's iPod? Email heymsn@microsoft.com and we'll try to get a playlist together.
Speculation that Katie would undergo a Scientology-approved "silent" birth was fueled last weekend when large signs were delivered to Cruise's Beverly Hills compound, with one reading, "... be silent and make all physical movements slow and understandable."
If you're not up on your "Dianetics," this is what L. Ron Hubbard says about keeping mum while squeezing out a human being: "Maintain silence in the presence of birth to save the sanity of the mother and the child and safeguard the home to which they will go."
But as Tom explained to Barbara Walters, "There have been misinterpretations that the woman can't make any noise, and it's just not true. It's nutty."
The upshot is to "just be calm and quiet," he says. "I want Kate to be as comfortable as possible. And whatever she's going to go through, she's going to go through. And I'm going to be there."
While having Tom's amped-up presence in the delivery room is sure to create a tranquil setting, it remains unclear where exactly the momentous event will take place. Rumors have ranged from Tom's 90210 digs to a Scientology stronghold such as the Freewinds, a ship that doubles as a church.
OK! magazine, however, is convinced it'll happen at an actual medical facility, namely Saint John's Health Center in Santa Monica.
"Katie is doing exactly what she wants and [Tom] is respecting her wishes," another "source close to the couple" claims to the mag. "She has secretly chosen where she wants to have her baby and she's making sure Tom goes along with her."
