Hollywood actor STEPHEN BALDWIN has won the support of a powerful religious ally in his battle against pornography, after discovering a store selling sex films is opening just a mile from his home in New York State.
Born again Christian Baldwin vowed to stand outside the store in Nyack every day and take photographs of the license plates of anyone who visits it earlier this year (06).
He also threatened to publish a list of all the store's workers and customers in a newspaper advert each month, in a bid to force the business to shut down.
And earlier this month (MAR06), the Catholic Citizenship organisation joined THE USUAL SUSPECTS actor in his campaign, filing a petition against the impact the store has had on the community living in Nyack.
Baldwin, 39, tells the New York Daily News, "I'm not directly involved in the petition, but it's exactly what I've been arguing. This store would bring the type of individual we do not want. Sex offenders will come to town, deviants will come to town. I think it is ridiculous that this store is 200 feet from an elementary school."
Catholic Citizenship attorney DAVID MACCARTNEY adds, "The planning board has a responsibility under state law to take a hard look at the environmental impact of the project on the community."

I love it when sleazebags "find" religion and try to ram it down everybody else's throats.

I actually like this guy. As far as I know he supports PETA, animal rights, and it sounds like he is concerned about his neighborhood.
I agree that adult stores should be far away from schools etc. 99% of the people who shop there are more likely than not totally normal folks but the 1% of the sick puppys need to be far from children or other vulnerable people.

It's not against the law to visit a shop. All he and others who support him are saying is that stores with adult content should not be within 300 feet of an elementary school!
Most people who visit those shops are probably "normal", however there is a minority who are sick individuals who basically can't be trusted around the rest of us.
As an aside, who in the world visits these types of shops nowadays? Why not purchase over the internet in the privacy of your own home?

Um ok, as far as I know pedophiles wouldn't be visiting an adult porn shop.. they don't usually carry kiddie porn so that theory is kind of dead.
Secondly, 'born-agains' make me want to puke.

You don't find that logic slightly flawed?
Shopping malls should be 18+ then......kids go there! So all the freaks will follow them in to the parking lot!
sexual /= sexual predator.
that idea comes out of religious guilt.
anyways it always seems like the pedophile turns out to be the teacher you sang with in choir. not the one that hung out at porn shops.

Are porn shops the cool place to hang out now? Can we play our car stereos really loud in the parking lot?

And there are sick individuals working at banks, hotels, CHURCHES, restaurants, SCHOOLS...they don't wear big signs that say "Hey there, I am a sexual pervert" the only way to help prevent the sick fucks from hurting our kids is to teach our kids. My children have known from a very early age what is appropriate behaviour and what isn't. They have been taught to go to someone they trust if they have a problem.
Writing down the license plates of people who come and go from this place is total bullshit.
As far as a pedophile, legally they arent' supposed to be within X feet of a school period. I don't think this store is going to "bring in the bad people"...

yep there are bad people everywhere, but that doesn't make it acceptable to put a porn shop 300 feet from an elementary school.
Sadly we can teach our kids what we think will protect them, but that doesn't always do the job.
There is no valid reason for placing a shop like that so near a school. If for no other reason that it could possibly make the kids curious about porn, for many it will have no effect, but a few may end up in the clutches of porn-addiction which could ruin not only their lives but the lives of their future wives/husbands or family. It isn't worth the risk. Put the porn shop a few blocks away where the kids are less likely to be exposed to it.
I have to question why someone would want a porn shop so near a school. Even if a person is pro-porn that should be a no-brainer.

JungleMonkey I agree completely and am so glad you said it. As a resident of Nyack, Mr. Baldwin has the constitutional right to protest outside of a business that he feels is a threat to the Nyack way of life. Every citizen of the US has the right of free speech, not just the liberal left. Born again Christians have just as much right to their opinions as everyone else. I wouldn't want my child walking home past a porn shop. There has to be someplace else for this person to put his/her shop. JMO

they don't let the in, but the curiosity of the shop could lure them into pornography way before they are old enough to deal with it.
I read an article recently which talked about how many younger people have a skewed view of sex and body image due to the fake world of porn, and it impacts their real life relationships in a negative way because of it.
While I accept that porn is always going to be part of society, I don't think it needs to be next door to a school.
I think porn can be very harmful and due to the internet the problem is only getting worse.
If someone wants to go to the porn shop fine, but if they are worried about their license plate being put in the paper, maybe they should take a minute and re-think what they are doing.
