John Travolta’s decision to play a woman in “Hairspray” has raised eyebrows among some Scientology watchers.
The actor will reportedly dress in drag to take on the role of middle-aged mom Edna Turnblad in the high-camp John Waters film — a part made famous by the notorious cross-dresser Divine. Edna was later played on Broadway by outspoken gay activist Harvey Weinstein.
A recent Rolling Stone article about Scientology reports that its founder, L. Ron Hubbard, felt that gays “should be taken from … society as rapidly as possible” because “no social order will survive which does not remove these people from its midst.”

“If Hubbard had historically had his way there would be no John Waters films in America and no gay actors to play the part of Edna Turnblad,” notes Rick Ross on Cultnews.com, “which would of course leave Mr. Travolta with no new character role. And it’s doubtful that Scientology’s savior would find anything appealing about Travolta dressed in drag as Edna Turnblad.”
The couch jumping continues
Tom Cruise has a bit of an image problem.
In a recent poll, more people said they’d rather spend the night with Saddam Hussein than the “Top Gun” star. Stuff magazine asked its readers who they would least like to share a camping tent with, and 41 percent chose the couch-jumping star.
Deposed dictator Hussein came in close behind, with 39 percent, 15 percent said Pat O’Brien, and 5 percent chose comedian Kathy Griffin.

Re: Scientology double-whammy: Travolta AND Cruise
Travolta will NEVER be as good in that role as Divine was. I can't believe John Waters is gonna go through with it. Is he doing this movie?

Re: Scientology double-whammy: Travolta AND Cruise
I'm not sure if Waters is doing it, but if he is, I have a feeling he'll either totally pull it off or else throw John to the dogs for belonging to such a homophobic sect.

The only way Travolta should be allowed to play this role is if he bulks up to about 350 lbs. like Divine. Now that would be worth seeing...hehehehe

Why do they need to remake this movie? It wasn't made that long ago! Wait a minute, this is from the same Hollywood that remakes Pride and Prejudice 350 times. Whatever.

It isn't going to be totally the same as the original movie. They are making the movie of the musical, like they just did with The Producers. I figured this would be next on their list. Who knows, maybe Spamalot will come after this one?

Maybe they'll do Spinal Tap as a drama.

Interesting...I just thought it was weird since it wasn't that long ago that the original movie came out...what was that, like 89?
