The saga of Nick vs. Jessica reaches a new level on magazine stands this week. In what are being billed as each one's first interview since the couple split last fall, Nick Lachey, 32, spills to Teen People, and Jessica Simpson, 25, tells all in W magazine. USA TODAY's Karen Thomas does a comparison:

"Don't feel sorry for me. ... I have a great life," Lachey tells Teen People, on newsstands Friday. "I feel like I can do anything, and there's nobody to answer to but myself," Simpson tells W, on sale Friday in New York and nationwide March 17. "I've finally come to the realization that it's OK to not be perfect."


What's ahead "I can't wait until the day I have kids. Obviously, it's not the right time for me to be a father, but the one thing I haven't had the chance to dois be a great dad." Her first-ever personal checkbook. "She asked the other day for a checkbook, and I looked at her like she was kidding," her assistant and friend CaCee Cobb tells W.

Romance Photographed recently with former Miss Kentucky USA Elizabeth Ann Arnold. He doesn't talk about his love life in Teen People. Linked in tabloids to Maroon 5 frontman Adam Levine and actor Jude Law. Though W refers to these reports, she refuses to comment on them.

Ex-factor During a photo shoot at a Malibu mansion for the magazine, Lachey says he would love to live in a similar house,then adds that it isn't Simpson's style at all. She tells W that she talks to Lachey every few days and that he's "absolutely" one of her best friends.

Professional resume Just released a new single, What's Left of Me, with still-untitled CD tentatively set for May release. Also, he helped launch yfly.com,a website with an online community for teens. Currently filming Employee of the Month (due later this year), in which she stars as a Costco hottie.

Current digs Hunting for a home on Mulholland Drive. A rented gated house in Santa Fe with two girlfriends; has purchased a $3 million bungalow in Beverly Hills.

I always find it really odd that you have thirtysomethings like Gwen Stefani and Mariah on the cover of YM and Seventeen and then you have teens like Hilary Duff and Lindsay Lohan on the cover of Vogue and Elle. Kind of backward!
