I feel like being a celebrity and having kids is a huge responsibility. I would want to make sure I was fully prepared to handle what would happen to those kids when they have to deal with the baggage of having a famous parent."
That's Mariah Carey with Barbara Walters. You'll see this interview tomorrow on Barbara's pre-Oscar special (very "pre" - this is the first time the show has not aired on Oscar night itself, which is Sunday).
As for Mariah's remarks on having kids - brava! Famous or not, so many people decide to have children for all the wrong reasons; they raise unhappy children. Mariah seems reasonably content with her fame, fans, work. Mariah knows the damage of an insecure home environment. That she sees clearly she might not be mature or unselfish enough to raise her own kids, is a testament to real maturity.
I love Mariah. And she does a lot for children anyway, through her various charities.

I'm so happy to hear this. THis might be the most intelligent thing that she's ever said. Why can't more celebrities do this eg. Meg Ryan, Sharon Stone.

Re: Mariah doesn't want kids
Of course she doesn't want children. Children take time and attention away from you and they require something of you, that you give of yourself. I doubt very seriously from what I know of Mariah that she's capable of this. At least she's self aware enough to know she'd just screw them up.

Re: Mariah doesn't want kids
Children cost money. Just imagine if Mariah would have to pay for an attendant to hold her drinks, AND a nanny for the baby!!!

Plus, if she had a daughter, God forbid she'd have to share her Hello Kitty and butterfly stuff and all.

Re: Mariah doesn't want kids
Good thing, the last thing I think she needs to do is reproduce.
Although I have to say, her voice is amazing, even if she is trash. It wouldn't be a bad thing to have a child with her singing voice that was not raised by her.
Didn't she break up Tommy Mattola's marriage? If she was going to have kids, I would have thought it would have been after that.

Re: Mariah doesn't want kids
I can totally see her doing the adoption thing, like Meg Ryan, when she is like 45 or something. Once her fame and 'beauty' have faded.......it's a good way of scaring up publicity too.

Re: Mariah doesn't want kids
Probably the only intelligent decision she has ever made in her life! She seems entirely to self centered and selfish to be a mom.

I'd rather have more women deciding against motherhood, than the current amounts of women popping out kids they then fail to take care of the way a good parent should.
So I absolutely applaud anyone who does not put children on the planet, just for the sake of the opinion of some who claim "you're not a real woman unless you've given birth". That's such a load of crock it makes my ears ring.
My comment was only in reference to the individual named Mariah Carey. She's too used to playing "little princess" herself, to be taking care of one. But then, she'd probably hire staff to fulfill that task for her

I honestly cannot picture Mariah "I'm eternally 12" Carey as a mother anyway...just can't picture it.

It must be hard to have a child being so famous. Sure you can hire nannies (if you're a heartless person and don't care about being there for your kids), but if Mariah isn't in a relationship and doesn't really plan on re-marrying then I can see why she wouldn't want to have children. Without a father there for them what would be the point? Another kid the paparazzi would be chasing around like Jolie-Pitt kids or Madonna's kids? Good for her for thinking of the children and not just her biological clock.
