Pamela Anderson has announced she'll be boycotting the Kentucky Derby horserace this year (06) because she thinks it's a cruel spectacle - and she's urging other celebrities to stay away too.
The outspoken, animal-loving actress/model has joined activists at People For The Ethical Treatment Of Animals (PETA) in a new campaign to end the famous US horserace's celebrity connections.
She says, "It makes me want to avoid Kentucky altogether, which is sad because there are so many great people there. I don't want to support cruelty to animals, whether it's forcing horses to race for our amusement or scalding chickens alive for our plate."
Anderson's decision to attack the Kentucky Derby is a blow for organisers because she has become a regular at the sporting event in recent years.

I have to agree with her. I'm not a fan of horse or dog racing.

I'm not a fan of horse racing either, The way those animals are pushed to beyond their limits is cruel. Also dog racing, I cannot stand how many of the owners abandon their dogs once they get too old to race. A man my boyf knows has just taken in a ex race dog that was left on a motorway.
But that is a good point CalendarGurl, why now?

I know some good people who have a horse that is in the Derby this year and they treat their horses better than people. Those horses are pampered in everyway you can pamper a horse and than some! After their horses are finished with racing, they still have a wonderful life and spend the rest of their days in the warm sun, green fields, and lots of TLC.
Race dogs on the other hand, it is really horrible. Notice you don't see too many rescue orgs for race horses as you do for the race dogs?
I think Pam was just trying to get ANYONE not to do business or even support KFC for the way they mutilate the chickens which is a very noble cause but the Derby has been going on Foreva and it will contine.

I agree with you yet again, MM. My turn to buy you a drink
And what continues to amaze me is how people can't see the brutality in this, yet so many claim to be 'animal lovers'...if people only really knew what happens to animals...I am glad at least that Pamela is trying to do something.

I grew up w/ many friends in the racing business t& those horses really are pampered. There are better causes for PETA & the animal rights people to be campaigning for, having been to farms where race horses are kept & then to farms where retired horses are kept, I can say that these horses are not treated cruelly at all.

I just don't see the point, or value, of using animals for sport. At all.

Absolutely. These animals are the pampered superstars of the animal world. I'm not sure how people think horse racing is cruel to the animals because horses will run, race or no race and as long as they're not mistreated it's what they were designed to do. No one mistreats a Ferrari and it's the same thing with a race horse. Particularly now that they test for doping. Now the poor jockeys on the other hand.... they need help. I'd be more impressed if Pam was boycotting because of the way jockeys are mistreated.
If you have an animal worth several million dollars or even just thousands you're not going to do those things listed by MonkeyMix. It doesn't happen, it's a lie perpetuated by animal rights groups. Can you tell me how many jockeys die yearly as a result of racing? Didn't think you could. There are deaths, catastrophic injuries totaling around 10 per year with an additional 50 to 100 having to retire due to disablements earned while riding. It's a barbaric thing and I'd like to see horse racing banned because of what it does to the men and women who ride.
I've been around races and the horse world. I live right in the middle of Virginia horse country and pass farms that turn out Kentucky Derby entrants yearly. In fact my eldest daughter worked for a world class stable for many years before she married and those horses are not mistreated in any way. I find it amusing that many here that think it's a okay for a human to be euthanized are offended when a horse with a broken leg is put down.

Many of those horses go on to breed their entire lives. I used to ride & we got many ex-racehorses at our barn. They were retrained so we could show them.

Pamela Anderson was the one who was totally sloshed at a previous Kentucky Derby. She was with Kid Rock then, but there were stories about her behavior.

I find it very hard to take this woman's moral position seriously when she is such a trashy slut. Females like her set women back decades, yet I'm supposed to applaud her moral stance? Whatever. I'm not trying to belittle animal cruelty or anything, but maybe I feel just as strongly about skanks like her as some people feel about animals, so I'm really not trying to be nasty or anything, I just feel like she would bring negative attention to the cause.

Love her or hate her, Pamela Anderson gets media attention, which is what the animal rights community needs. And she's not the only one: more and more people in Hollywood are speaking out for animals. I've found that I like Pam more now that I know she's so dedidated to animal welfare, and I bet a lot of other people feel that way too.
