It is severe sudden sensorineural hearing loss...they don't know much about what causes it...it's "often" suspected to be caused by a viral infection, but it's true that there can be other causes including drugs. Very scary story; her hearing was going in and out for a couple of days but then one morning she woke up and was just stone deaf!
