The Black Eyed Peas’ Fergie Tapped to Sing the National Anthem at the Daytona 500
2006 NASCAR season weekend kickoff to also include anthem performance by Gavin DeGraw preceding the Busch Series Hershey's Kissables 300
February 9, 2006
The Black Eyed Peas’ Fergie, who has recorded such hits as “Let’s Get it Started,” “Don’t Lie,” “Don’t Phunk With My Heart” and “Hey Mama” will sing the National Anthem prior to the Daytona 500, the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series’ biggest, richest and most prestigious race, on Sunday, Feb. 19 (NBC 12 p.m.). In addition to Fergie,
J Records platinum recording artist Gavin DeGraw will sing the National Anthem to start the Busch Series Hershey's Kissables 300 on February 18th.
Fergie joined The Black Eyed Peas in 2000, and their album “Elephunk” became an overwhelming success. The Black Eyed Peas released “Monkey Business” in 2005 and Fergie is currently working on a solo album that is set to be released this year.
“NASCAR is not the same sport as it was 10 years ago, it has evolved, and with it, so has its fan base,” said Daytona International Speedway President Robin Braig. “The average NASCAR fan is very well plugged into entertainment culture, making a popular artist like Fergie a perfect choice to connect with the NASCAR audience.”
Gavin DeGraw, for years a crowd favorite in the New York club scene, made his breakthrough when his song “I Don’t Wanna Be” was selected as the theme song for the WB’s One Tree Hill. Another of DeGraw's songs, "Follow Through," has also achieved popularity and radio play, and his song "We Belong Together" has recently been featured in the 2006 movie Tristan and Isolde, starring James Franco and Sophia Myles. DeGraw will perform the national anthem prior to the Busch Series Hershey’s Kissables 300 in Daytona on Saturday, February 18th at 1:30 pm live on TNT.
