French film beauty BRIGITTE BARDOT has blasted the Romanian government for condoning a cull of stray dogs after a Japanese businessman was bitten to death by one in Bucharest.
The actress-turned-animal rights activist launched her attack on a Radio France show, slamming Bucharest mayor ADRIEAN VIDEANU's move to cut the time stray animals are detained in shelters before being put down as sickening.
She said, "When I think that the only way that has been found is to kill them, I tell you it's not nice what the government is doing."
The 68-year-old Japanese tourist bled to death in the city last Sunday (29JAN06) after a stray dog - one of up to 100,000 in the capital - bit him in the leg.
Bardot previously pledged to donate $150,000 (GBP85,000) to fund a mass sterilisation programme designed to reduce strays on the street, but Romanian President TRAIAN BASESCU abandoned the venture after just a month in favour of further culls.

I think if you have that many stray animals -- unwanted, unsanitary
and hungry -- you have a recipe for disaster. I don't know what
the Humane Society is like in post-Nicolae Ceausescu Romania,
but I'm betting they're overloaded.
Did she send a card to the family of the victim?

.Remember this is the woman who couldnt even deal with her own son and abandoned him to his father to be raised. She can only relate to animals as she has nothing but contempt for everything else. When animals are more important to you than real people you have a problem with yourself. Suntanned herself to a frizzle, got ugly and then rejected everyone and everything. Collects stray dogs for amusement and pretentiousness. Well thats what I think. Free speech here is still O.K. isnt it?

yeah, thats true about she and her son.
As much as i respect her for her work with animals, shes been a total bitch in her personal life. She wrote in her own autobiography that when she was pregnant with her son Nicholas, she felt as if a cancer was growin inside of her. That has to be the most despisable quote from a mother ive ever heard. It took a lot of years to her son to forgive her for that and talk to her again.
Oh, and just add to the list that shes married with an ex nazi. Go figure.

Well, when I was in the Bucharest, Romania and its mountainous regions, there were sooo many stray dogs just roaming around in packs and at times I felt scared to go to my intended spot because there were dogs that seemed aggressive or were just growling at me. Sleeping at night, you could hear some dogs getting into fights--their howling and crying that would ensue afterwards would just break your heart.

Sterilization is a good start.
Honestly, I didn't know she was still alive.

That would break my heart too. They need to do something. At least stop new litters.

I read in the Sunday Mail I think it was that dogs are getting more viscious and even the family pet can turn on you and tear your face off if you annoy it. I was wondering if this might have anything to do with all the tins of Pal they are fed and if the preservatives and what not in it are doing the dogs nervous system damage? The food we eat is bad enough, but I think pet food industies being the big seller that it is, wouldnt they do whatever it takes to get more food into dogs, and using anything to make it seem tasty, any chemical they can lay their hands on, who cares about the dogs health down the track, longs as he keeps getting his Pal (dog food brand name). Seems it wasnt this bad years ago, thats when they raw meat like rabbits and stuff.

I hardly think the strays in Romania are getting tinned dog food. From the photos my daughter took last summer in Romania I think they'd be lucky to just be getting regular table scraps.
While I'm not in favor of wholesale slaughter I don't see any other way for a poorer nation like Romania to deal with this problem except to euthanize the lot of them before they turn into more of a safety issue for the people.

Agree - it would be impossible to round up hundreds of thousands (possibly millions across the country) of semi-feral strays and sterilize them. Apart from the prohibitive cost, who's going to look after them afterwards? I highly doubt that Romania has a sophisticated Adpot A Dog scheme - their orphanages are packed with unwanted and abandoned children, let alone dogs needing a loving home. And they'd STILL need to be fed somehow. They are not aggressive because of some petfood company conspiracy, they are behaving like dogs do when they are born in the wild and have not been socialised with humans. There is only one solution, and Brigitte won't like it.

I LOVE animals, sometimes more than people, I think euthanizing is most humane in a case like this unfortunately.
