When someone asks, I have a hard time defining where I'm from. I lived up north until I was 9 (but wasn't born there), but spent a majority of my life in the south. In Florida, you're not a true Floridian unless you were born here. I only have an accent on occasion - sometimes I drawl a bit. For the most part though, you can't tell where I'm from.
Because of that, I can sort of see the ambiguity in what you'd call yourself. However, she left the UK for Australia, then left their for the US. Maybe she should insist she's American then.

I guess I can understand. I live in the South(ern US) for a while, and even aquired an accent, but I'm from the Midwest, and there's nothing southern about me. And thank god, the accent is gone.
