This was an interesting read. I think lobster is OK (I prefer crab), but haven't tried anything else on the list. Oysters look gross, as does fois gras. Sushi, while is pretty to look at, gives me the willies and polenta has always looked to me as it's described in the article -- mush.

I'm not the most adventurous eater, as you can tell!

Love lobster but can't be arsed to prepare/cook it. Raw oysters are indeed a mouthful of salty snot but are OK cooked. But I still wouldn't go to the trouble. Sushi is very 5 years ago. Since when is polenta "fancy"? It's like rice, pasta, potato, couscous, etc. Depends how you cook it but it's cheap and available in all supermarkets. Fois gras - hugely over-rated and I don't like the way it's produced anyway.

I've never tried anything on the list & do not intend to. The fois gras sounds disgusting.
My goal is to be happy with my life.

i've always been a firm believer in trying everything once. eating is like music and literature and art - you have to be curious and willing to try something new to develop your taste.

LOVE LOBSTER.. most seafood I love. Lobster is like.. the gold of the seafood world. Crab and shrimp are the silver. the rest is bronze.

Never tried clams or raw oysters though.. my father used to get oysters out of those tins, he'd just peel it back and start eating.. god that stunk

    i recommend trying oysters.
some people are turned off by the texture but if you're not a picky eater you should be fine. they taste delicious. either with lemon or with vinegar and shallots. you have to be sure they are really fresh though. and have them with some chilled white wine. mmmm. now i'm hungry

Yes, salty, slimy snot comes to mind when I think of consuming oysters. Yuck!
I do not understand the appeal at all.

And lobsters? Maybe it's because the one time I tried lobster it had the texture of rubber (overcooked?), I'll never be tempted to try it again.

The only seafood I can handle is salmon - everything else is too fishy or slimy.

Traveling around Andalucia, Spain a few years ago was an absolute nightmare for my seafood hating self. The seafood dishes have eyes, heads, legs and tentacles!!

Lobster should not be rubbery at all. it should not be tough. It should be a good consistency. Dried out, or mushy is badly cooked lobster. It should be succulent and springy.

p.s. never eat at red lobster.

Exactly! Bad lobster is well, bad. But good lobster is the most amazing, sweet, tender, deliciously luxurious thing you will ever put in your mouth.

I plan on trying everything on this list that I haven't tried yet. Why not?

Grimm - If you've never tried clams, next time you go to an Italian restaurant order spaghetti alla vongole. Delish.

i have a chinese girlfriend that won't eat polenta, because in china when she was a kid, that's what the government sent to her town to feed them during famine...

she always associates it with starvation and poverty....and laughs when she sees it on menus....

it is cheap in supermarkets though

Back in Victorian times oysters were so cheap and plentiful poorer people used to add them to bulk out meat stews. I'm not sure why they later became such an expensive, luxury item. Purists say it's sacriledge to cook them but it's the only way I can face them.

    Oysters Kilpatrick

    1 Dozen Fresh Oysters (opened)
    100 grams diced bacon
    1 Lemon
    3 Tbspns Tomato sauce
    3 Tbspns Worcestershire sauce

Set the Oysters on a bed of coarse salt, or an oven tray lined with foil
    Sprinkle bacon over the oysters
Blend the worcestershire and tomato sauce, to create 'Kilpatrick' sauce
Top the oysters with a small amount of this sauce.

Grill until the bacon is cooked (5-10 minutes)

Wait until the bacon is cooked then sprinkle grated cheese onto the oysters and grill for a further 3 minutes before serving.
