You have to start kids very young on "unusual" foods as they are by nature very conservative about what they will and won't eat and prefer to stay with familiar things. And if you have only given them chicken nuggets and macaroni cheese then that's what they will always pick. Example - most kids shudder at the thought of fish and/or spinach. I made my kids a fish/spinach/potato puree from the time they were weaned and to this day they both love fish and spinach (although not necessarily puree'd!). And with stronger or spicier tastes you have to educate your tastebuds. Remember how strong and bitter coffee tasted the first time? And if you only feed kids what they demand (ie, bland boring) for a quiet life they are never going to learn. My mother used to serve up a meal and we were expected to eat it. If we didn't, we went hungry. We quickly learned to appreciate different foods and flavours.
