The glass bottle is legendary but apparently they're going to repackage it in *gasp* a squeezy bottle. I give it a year before they change back to the little glass jars, the fools.

    I'm a bit obsessed.

Rogue, I watched a programme recently called the BIG SQUEEZE which was all about the marketing behind the new marmite in a squeezy bottle. It looks to be very succesful. The idea is you can draw shapes and write things on your toast. I think its a good bit of promotion really, but they are hanging on to the glass jars too, so you'll be happy!

It's a black, savoury paste made from brewers yeast (vitamin B) and is a by-product of the brewing industry. You spread it sparingly on toast, crackers, etc. YOu either love it or hate it. Marmite is the European version, Vegemite is the Australian equivalent. To connoiseurs they are slightly different, but still basically the same thing. Best eaten spread thinly on hot, buttered toast.

I much prefer Marmite, Vegemite tastes slightly different to me. The best way has to be to lightly toast a piece of good wholemeal or multigrain bread, with vegetable spread (butter overpowers it for me) and then spread thinly on top. I use it in cooking though; if I'm cooking a soy product like mince, I'll put a teaspoon of marmite in rather than stock, as it has a richer flavour. I'll also put marmite on dark rye ryvita.

I'm so glad they're keeping the jar as well..it wouldn't be marmite without the jar

I grew up on Marmite, and had to change to Vegemite when we came to Oz because you can't get Marmite here. It's available in New Zealand though so I stock up when we go there. I like both, but agree they are diffent. Don't ask me to explain why, they just are (back to the Coke/Pepsi thing again). Of the two I think I prefer Marmite, but I am content to be a happy little Vegemite if I have no choice. A squeezy bottle sounds awful. I'll stick with the glass jar with the retro yellow label thanks.

I think I've already mentioned it in this particular thread, but Marmite is a great seasoning. Vegetarians can mix it with water, onion granules and soy sauce to make a quick 'beef' broth [cheaper than buying veg. beef bouillon]. I use Marmite to season gravy, soups and homemade seitan.

I can tell you are well and truly converted Monkey! We'll make a happy little Vegemite of you yet. Here's the song!

    We're happy little Vegemites
As bright as bright can be.
    We all enjoy our Vegemite
    For breakfast, lunch, and tea.
    Our mother says we're growing
    stronger every single week.
    Because we love our Vegemite.
    We all adore our Vegemite.
It puts a rose in every cheek!

Lamingtons? Hedgehog? A few Four N Twenty pies? Footy franks? You'll have to send it express so they don't begin to stink.

I've done it on another board. It was a small, close knit group of people where many of them took it upon themselves to meet in real life. It was kind of fun to get little goody bags in the mail every so often.
