i'd gladly eat 20k cals/day if i could gourge on effie's cooking! my yiayia makes the best food - all sorts, not just greek - and she's getting to the age (89) where we don't want her taking on full meal preparation anymore so i'm really at a loss for fabulous greek food.

i'm seconding the request for a mousaka recipe that you all approve of.

it isn't easy because she only uses recipes as a road map. she hasn't really referred to them in a long time and just knows what to do and how to add her special touch to make things fabulous. it is amazing how you can do exactly what she does but it still doesn't come out tasting like hers. even plain spaghetti with butter and parm!

i think i've mentioned it here before but i'm greek-lite, my dad doesn't speak greek and we really aren't immersed in the culture or anything. i definitely wasn't going to throw my hat in the ring with the real deal's of yanna & effie!

Fgg, you don't need to speak the language or be super into the culture. We love you and claim you anyway

I know what you mean about your yiayia not needing recipes anymore. Natural cooks are like that. It's torture trying to get a recipe out of my dad.

    Haha, A*O, you're mean.

I promised Daphne a lamb recipe so here is my recipe for lamb in the oven with rice:

    You need
Around 1.5 kg lamb cut in portions
    1 onion
    3 cloves garlic
1/3 of a cup white wine
    oregano and thyme
    rice
1/3 of a cup olive oil

Season the lamb with the oregano, thyme, salt and pepper and put it in a large roasting pan with a lid. Add the olive oil, wine and finely chopped onions and whole garlics on top (you will remove the garlics before adding the rice). Slow cook the lamb for very long. I usually do roughly 3 hours at 150 C. After three hours uncover the meat and add rice on the juices as well as around 3 cups of water. Cook at around 200 C, adding water as needed until the rice looks done. I serve the rice with some lemon juice on top and I also add dill.

I'm afraid I don't do any yoghurt sauces other than tzatziki so can't help you there. But you could just mix some greek yoghurt with paprika and have that on the side. It would go great with the meat and the rice.

It is pretty good. When I make it, we end up fighting over the rice as much as the meat.
