The trick with fresh fruit and veggies is to go back to what our grandma's did and only buy stuff that's in season. We are so used to seeing strawberries at Christmas it's easy to forget they are imported at huge expense - another knockon effect of the increased gas/diesel price and the costs of hauling things in trucks. You can freeze quite a lot of fresh produce but you have to prepared it, usually by blanching. And of course there's the old fashioned bottles and jars of fresh tomato sauce, peaches and pickled veggies that my mother and her mother used to make.

Perhaps I'm a loser, but I use coupons like they are gold. I am very picky with brands, and am a vegetarian, so some stuff is expensive. But I have become great at saving money in almost every category, and I save a lot even on "my" brands. I shop at several stores, as different items are cheaper different places. And on Ebay I will actually buy coupons. For example, Lightlife products are between $2.50-5.00 each. I buy a lot of those. So i paid $2 for 20 coupons, $1 off each. Saved a ton. I read somewhere that coupons actually save companies money. If there were no such thing, prices would be about a third lower, so they opt for coupons instead. They can keep prices higher, while OFFERING deals/coupons that they know many people won't use. So use the heck out of them .

What is the difference between a regular and a super Walmart?

The Super Walmarts have a full grocery store inside, and are often open 24 hours.

You can get the rice at a regular store.

This isn't a $$ saver, but they carry this lunchmeat that's awesome~ by Jennie-O, Tomato Basil Turkey. I can't find it anywhere else.

So, I regularly hit Aldi, Save-a-Lot, and Super Walmart for groceries, whew!

I find the best way to make my money go further is to shop at different places for different things. Obviously wasting gas by driving all around would defeat the purpose, but I can walk to several stores near my house and the one that I do drive to is near my work and I go on my lunch hour. That one is a Sobey's and always has the best meat deals, with lots of 50% markdowns for stuff that's about to be taken off the shelves. Any decent meat at $3/kg or less is quite a good price for here, (if it's 50% off on top of that so much the better) and I can usually find pork, chicken and ground meats at that price on various occasions and just stock up.

I find the cheapest produce at the fruit markets along the major street near me (29 cents/kilogram for bananas!), bread is cheapest at the independent bakery near my house (79 cents for a loaf of whole wheat), and packaged foods are often cheapest at the Pakistani grocer - a 6-pack of large pitas was 99 cents, rice and couscous are in bulk sizes there and very reasonable. We also have a Bulk Barn right nearby that I've only just started going to. Their prices for specialty and health flours, organic spices, nuts, cat food, etc. are quite good.

^ I do that to, Tati. I can get my veggies at Food Lion but the meats are MUCH cheaper and look a lot better at the local Piggly Wiggly. It is a major difference!

Anyway, one of my local supermarket chains started a 'gasoline' incentive. For every $50.00 you spend at this store, you get $.10 cents off a gallon of gas. And it's a rolling thing too, so if you spend say $30.00 one trip, it will roll over to the next time you come in--does that make sense? Anyway....I shop here EVERY week not even because of this but because its incredibly CHEAP as it is. So this is just an added bonus. Last week, I filled up my tank and saved---get this---$2.30 a GALLON just for shopping at this particular store. Not doing anything different than I would have normally done. And this program has been going on for at least a year, well before the prices got seriously out of control......

I love it though. Price Chopper---look for it by name.

And BJ's and Sams. Gotta buy in bulk especially for baby stuff!
Our Giant Eagle has the same gas program. It's great.. your buying groceries anyway..the free gas is a HUGE added bonus. This year alone we have gotten $250.00+ in free gas.

Well I only saved about 15 cents a gallon at Kroger so I was a little dissapointed, but anything is better than nothing, and I would have purchased the food/RX's there anyway. I am craving junk and sweets right now. I have all of this good healthy stuff to fix and eat, and all I want to do is nosh on chips, dip, candies, chocolate, processed salty greasy food, etc.

sometimes you just get those cravings.

Well it would have to be an immaculate conception.

And it would only be worth it if I could give birth to a full grown 22 year old muscly horny Brazilian dude. We would immediately move to West Virginia (where everything is 'relative' if you get what I mean. ).
