They are not banning duck liver, they are banning foie gras, which is made with super-fatty duck livers produced by force-feeding ducks. No force feeding = no foie gras. You can't make foie gras from regular duck livers, but you can still eat them.

The article says they gave the producer 7 years to come up with a cruelty-free method of producing foie gras and they couldn't, thus the ban.

That's ridiculous. They produced foie gras long before force-feeding came about. You just give them a very rich diet. yes, you're going to have a lot less than we're used to now because the liver isn't going to grow to outrageous proportions, but its still foie gras.

Greys, if it can indeed be produced without force-feeding, I agree with you that the ban should be limited to force-fed livers.

it tastes nothing like the fat around steak, or congealed fat.
and it's not really like liverwurst or other patés either. if you were comparing cheeses, liverwurst and most patés would be cheez-whiz, and foie gras would be delicious unpasteurised camembert straight from the countryside in normandy.

it's not the same. there's a supermarket chain in switzerland that used to sell organic, 'cruelty-free' foie gras and though tasty, it didn't even come close.
