Default What foods do you consider unethical to eat?

For me, it's anything on an endangered species list such as sea bass and tiger prawns, factory-farmed meat and chickens, anything from Israel or various other dictatorships for political reasons, food that I know is likely to contain pesticides, especially pesticides not legal in North America.

Believe it or not, that still leaves a lot of great food choices.

Well, the only meat I eat is beef or chicken. I've cut back a lot on beef. Anything else that once had a momma, I don't eat. I go with free range when I can, but it's expensive.

I'm a very picky eater anyway, so that already keeps me away from a lot of questionable foods, like anything off the endangered species list.

I shame my self so much on what I eat. We waste so much, eat crap thats so unhealthy. Just for a craving, species are killed but not for hunger, but a suvenier. People are starving and Im complaining about my weight. I get critical on everything.

I won't eat veal. I recently started trying to buy free range eggs when I have a choice. The stores where I shop don't appear to have free range chicken yet. Sea bass or tiger prawns are not something I'd eat anyway, & didn't know they were endangered. Oh, and lobster. I just feel so damn sorry for them getting thrown into boiling water when you just saw them swimming around.

I haven't eaten veal in 15-20 years. Vile, vile what they do to those poor calves, quite apart from taking them away from their mother when they are pretty much infants.

I can't bring myself to eat veal or venison.
I don't consider myself an ethical eater though.

I will eat caviar, pate and I'll catch myself some and fry it up for dinner.

I have no ethics when I eat, I go buy taste, I don't like the way veal taste or lamb, caviar is just too gross to eat, I try not to eat stuff that is not semi natural, I don't eat a lot of processed food, I try to eat fresh stuff.
I do believe in eating chicken, pork, turkey, beef, fish, shrimp, clams and many other things, I do respect everyone choice in what they eat

Great now I am hungry

I wasn't aware tiger prawns were endangered :s i think I'm an ethical eater; I don't eat meat, fish and prawns very rarely, I've never eaten veal, even in my meat eating days I ran out of the room and was sick at the thought of eating veal schnitzel in Austria. The idea of foie gras disgusts me. I only eat free range eggs, i eat organically when I can afford it. I buy fairtrade when the option is available, and will buy from farmer's markets and support small businesses when it's available or I'm aware of it. I'm always drawn to businesses with ethical backgrounds, or who keep to the small business route, and remain small business minded even when they become big business, such as Lush and the New Covent Garden Soup Company

I will not eat veal. And I have a hard time with the idea of eating lobster. That said, I don't think it's unethical, per se, to eat these animals. Animals in the wild torture and kill each other every day (like cats with their mice, for instance), so I don't see why humans should be held to a different standard. We are animals! Just cuz we can use special tools and build computers don't make us any different.

But I do think it's wrong to cause undue stress and pain and agony on animals just so we can put 'em in our bellies. How we treat the animals before we eat them is what I find unethical.

Unethical
adj 1: not conforming to approved standards of social or professional behavior

I agree - although I always try to support Aussie farmers and buy food produced/grown in Australia which is pretty much anything and everything. However, I don't buy Australian rice, the production of which consumes obscene amounts of our most precious commodity, water.

We don't eat seafood at all, but we refuse to buy produce from Israel and Zimbabwe.

I will not touch veal, it is truly disgusting how they are raised. Especially the ones they market as "milk fed." I like lobster but won't boil it alive. I don't like the greasiness of lamb, so rarely eat it. I have no problem with venison because it is hunted, and I usually know the person who killed it, and if they are good shots or not. At least deer have a chance to get away, not like cows in slaughter houses.
