Default How do you pick a pineapple?

We usually buy the bags of frozen pineapple from WF for the boy. My husband and I were watching him eat some when we got to talking about how to pick a ripe fresh one. Neither one of us had any idea. So...how do you do it? Any tricks to picking a really good one?

    Thanks

my mom goes by the most fragrant ones.and make sure the bottom isn't mushy, but firm. it's better to get one that will ripen in your home (it smells really nice!)

I agree with SVZ. Some people pull the innermost leaves on the crown and if they pull out easy, it's a good one -- but I've heard that isn't true.

I also tend to pick ones with shades of gold and let them ripen a day or two at home.

I have one on my counter right now!

I know I'm going a bit OT here but I was reading a magazine yesterday and stumbled on the Gardening section ( I was very bored can I stress) Anyway, apparently when you buy a fresh pineapple, you can chop the top inch off and plant it for a really unusual houseplant, it said new leaves will grow and will gradually grow larger. Sounded interesting but I'm in no way green fingered and mine would probably die.

Very good question Angelbaby, I've never had a clue too...usually I pick one, I turn it to the left, I turn it to the right, I turn it upside down...taken!

I think it's true. But the smell test is the best indicator.

I just smell it. If it is really fragrant then it should be a tasty pineapple to eat! And make sure it is not really squishy.

I used to be.... um, like a salesperson in an upscale grocery, and I had to do pineapples a lot. Apparently, there really is no real way to pick a good one. Everyone has their little tricks, but they're really just getting lucky, I think.

Thanks for the tips guys. I'll give them a try. Even if there really isn't a sure fire way to pick one, it can't hurt.

I'll try that thing with the top too. I've been meaning to get some plants since we moved into our new place. I've been putting it off since I'm pretty sure I'd kill anything we'd get by forgetting to water it or something!

I go by smell. And as for the top thing --- it's true. I'm from Hawaii. Picking pineapples (by that I mean in pineapple fields) was the kind of work that high school kids used to do in my dad's time. Anyway, Dole and such cut off the tops of the pineapples and then plant 'em. At least, that's how I remember it! I haven't tried.
