Default Vegemite BANNED In the US!!!

WTF? It contains Folate (good for you M'kay?) but Uncle Sam says the only foods than may contain folate are breads and cereals. Therefore Vegemite is now banned and anyone found with a jar in their cupboard or, worse, 'smuggling' it into the country will be sent to Guantanamo Bay along with all the other turrists.

What????!! I'm American but my kiwi friend introduced me to vegemite and marmite. I've only had it a few times but only cause I don't know where the heck to get it locally. What I've had she gave me.

Bah, I'll see if she can smuggle some in. hehehe
Don't worry about what other people think. They don't do it very often.

You might still be able to get Marmite in the US - it's more or less the same product but it does taste different. It's like the Pepsi/Coke thing. I love Vegemite but admit when my husband brought me a couple of jars of Marmite (unavailable in Oz) from the UK earlier this year I was thrilled. It's nursery/comfort food - and VERY good for you! Almost pure vitamin B and no fat or carbs although it does taste best on a slice of thick, buttered toast which kinda ruins that bit.

I remember an old discussion of Vegemite/Marmite. How it was an accquired and then loved taste and how you had to spread it thinly on bread or a cracker. It piqued my interest. Does it taste like Spam? Is that the US version basically? (never had it)

    The Vegemite Song

    We're happy little Vegemites
As bright as bright can be.
    We all enjoy our Vegemite
    For breakfast, lunch, and tea.
    Our mother says we're growing
    stronger every single week.
    Because we love our Vegemite.
    We all adore our Vegemite.
It puts a rose in every cheek!

    What a cute song.

The only Spam I know is a tinned meat product? Kinda like tinned corned beef only made from pork.

Vegemite/Marmite is a yeast extract by-product of the brewing industry. It's a dark brown paste, pure vitamin B plus a few other good things, totally vegetarian, which is highly savoury. Not spicy exactly, but some find it very salty which is why you have to use it very sparingly on toast/crackers etc.

Like anchovies or Dr Peppers, it's one of those things you either love or hate on first taste, and you will only know one way or the other when you try it. I can only suggest you try a smear of it on a piece of warm, buttered toast.

I love buttered toast. So now I can't get any? Black market on the net maybe? You've got me wanting some now.

Hmmmmmmmm the toast in that pic has a LOT of Vegemite on it - prolly for a hardened addict. If you are a Vegemite Virgin then you need to use about half that amount - literally just a smear to begin with and then build up to a hardcore habit if you like it.

that's fucked up. the US pumps its livestock full of antibiotics and hormone, there's MSG in all the prepared foods, trans-fats, weird food colourings that are banned in other parts of the world, and they ban vegemite??? how retarded is that?

Marmite is widely available in Canada. I have two jars in my pantry. I use it for seasoning soups and gravies.

You could always FedEx some to yourself if you were coming over for a visit or living in the US already but going back to Australia for a bit.

Hmm. I hate anchovies, but I LOOOOOOVE Dr. Pepper, and I can't understand how anyone couldn't like it!

I've never had Vegemite or Marmite, although I once had the opportunity to try it. I didn't, cuz it's thick and almost black, and I'm a sucker for presentation: if it doesn't look appetizing, I'm loathe to taste it.
