Default Whole Foods Yanks $6 'Asparagus Water' After Internet Freakout*

Whole Foods Yanks $6 'Asparagus Water' After Internet FreakoutÂ*

Whole Foods took their ridiculousness to a new level recently by selling “asparagus water,” which was just three or four stalks of the vegetable in a 16 ounce water bottle sold for $6. After the internet nearly laughed itself to death, the product is no longer available.

On Tuesday, a Los Angeles Whole Check customer saw the “asparagus water” and posted a photo of the item on Instagram with this caption, “Somewhere in L.A., Whole Foods executives are laughing at all of us.”

Then others on social media joined in creating the term of the day, “Asparagus Water(gate).”

Whole Check then sent in reinforcements and, according to CBS News, a publicist jumped into the fray.

“We actually don’t sell asparagus water in our stores,” Whole Foods Market Senior Media Relations Specialist Liz Burkhart told CBS News. “We looked into the item as soon as it was brought to our attention.”

The water was “carried briefly” in just one store in Brentwood, California, but it has now been removed.

“It was meant to be water with the essence of vegetables and/or mushrooms (similar to bone broth), which is typically made over a long period of time soaking in water,” Burkhart explained. “It was made incorrectly and has since been removed.”

How could three stalks of asparagus sat in cold water that clearly hadn’t been boiled with other vegetables or bones, let alone boiled at all, be a… broth? Not to mention, who wants asparagus broth? Ew.

Asparagus Water(gate) comes after the New York City Department of Consumer Affairs announced the store was overcharging customers at a number of locations and the owners made an awkward apology.

    i hate whole foods.

every time i go there, i need to watch the cashiers like a hawk. they scan the items, but the price charged exceeds the posted price. i call them on it each time and they fix it. it happens so frequently, i'm sure it's a business practice. it can't be a 'mistake' each time ....

Before I began boycotting Whole Foods I was a huge fan of their 365 store brand items. The asparagus water is either a joke by a disgruntled team member or they were seriously selling that shit. I'd like to think it's a pissy employee loling their ass off but Whole Foods would never want to admit that everyone there doesn't buy into their philosophy 100%.

    And there's this too:

Whole Foods supermarkets have been routinely overcharging customers by overstating the weight of prepackaged meat, dairy and baked goods, New York City's consumer chief said Wednesday.

The price on a package of coconut shrimp at the upscale market was too high by $14.84, said Department of Consumer Affairs Commissioner Julie Menin. A package of chicken tenders was overpriced by $4.85, and a vegetable platter by $6.15, the department said.

They're in Colorado too. I like their products, but they're so pricy I only go when I want something special.

At our Whole Foods, you can buy a single cookie for as much as $4-6. The Wegman's store is closer, has just as good product, and lower prices.

Ah Wegman's, one of the truly great grocery stores. I miss Roseaur's from Montana (and NW). Colorado Springs has absolute shit for grocery stores. Cannot find a decent butcher anywhere.
