Deep-fried Mars bars are unhealthy, says Mars

A family owned pub in Scotland has come under fire for its famous deep-fried Mars bars, which the chocolate-covered nougat-maker says is "not in line" with the company's policy of promoting a "healthy active lifestyle."

The deep-fried Mars bar is a menu staple at the Stonehaven fish and chip shop in Aberdeenshire, which claims to have invented the dish.

But Mars Incorporated wrote a letter to the bar owners demanding a disclaimer on the menu to show the company — which makes M&Ms, Snickers bars, and hot chocolate, among other products — doesn't endorse this unhealthy treat.

"I was amazed when I got the lawyer's letter because I really feel they are giving me a slap on the wrist when I haven't tried to offend them," Lorraine Watson, who runs the pub with her husband Charlie, told the Scotsman newspaper. "We have been selling this deep fried Mars product for 20 years and this is the first time we have heard from Mars.

The letter came after newspapers reported the Watsons were considering applying for secured status for their invention under the European Union's Protected Food Name Scheme.

They soon dismissed the idea because of all the complicated paperwork and legal processes involved.

Nevertheless, Watson said she'll comply with the company's demands.

"And I am quite happy to put a disclaimer up because my intention was not to offend the Mars bar product. I am proud of the product — it does my business very well and it must be doing their business very well," she said.

"We get visitors from all over the world, from as far afield as Japan and America, coming to the shop and ordering our bar. I saw an Italian book on Scotland the other day and we were right next to Dunnottar Castle."

Because, of course, when not deep fried, they're part of a healthy breakfast or some such poo.

I can't believe we have spent all this money trying to communicate with Martians when all we had to do is fry a couple candy bars....

I've never understood deep frying candy and cookies. I mean I guess you have to batter it beforehand and that just seems gross.

Never had a candy bar deep fried, I would probably puke.

BUT....a deep fried Oreo?? That's some good shit right there yo.

I have only had it once, but it was a moment I will never forget.

They are pretty doggone tasty. I had one at the fair a few years ago and it was really good. Battered, deep fried and topped with drizzled chocolate sauce and powdered sugar.

What about Stonehaven's Schwetty Skittles? Why are they okay, but the deep-fried Mars Bar isn't???

Deep fried candy does not sound good to me at all... I stick to the classics at fairs like cotton candy...and beer.

They are DELICIOUS! We have an English Pub here that makes them and whenever I go there, I have to order one.

If done right, when you break into the batter, the Mars bar is warm, kinda melty and full of gooey goodness. A yum combination!
