Hey, unless the ducks are decimating the fucking grub worm population, I say don't hunt them!

I know you're in the higher end fashion industry but come on. No wonder zigzag was insulted (although her at "least I don't have to shop budget stores" comment was still fucked up.) I love me some LL Bean and Land's End too, simple, comfy and utilitarian and people who wear it are under no delusion that it's high fashion, which suits some people like me just fine. And I've never even been duck hunting.

Yea, what Beeyotch said. When there's mucking about to be done and dogs need to sleep in front of the fire, there's only one way to go - the Bean baybee. (I do draw the line at flannel lined mom jeans though - oh the horror of those catalog pics)

Oh come on, that last comment was meant to be a bitchy sarcastic joke. I know they don't always translate on the web. I don't actually think Bean is rubbish, and it's certainly good quality.

I'll back out of the thread now before it goes too far.

All this made me go to LL Bean's website. Where I promptly fell in love with a tartan skirt.

*covers head in horror* but at least you called it tartan & not plaid! *forgives Shinola*

Dunno about you guys but LL Bean, Landsend, etc are not budget, even by varying degrees - although it might be due to the currency convertion?

Those comments about "choosing career" etc were a) uncalled for and b) actually wrong in todays economic climate - I'm highly qualify & have worked for the Govt for a number of years (as a contractor with LOADS of responsibility & stress), but I've just taken a paycut of 1/3rd to get a job.... I know I'm not alone either.

I really need to go to make "virtual shop" of farmers supply places for you to see truely heinous clothing! Is it wrong that I draw the line at wellingtons? I wear surplus army boots....

I got a microfleece bathrobe from LL Bean two years ago (on sale--it was originally around $70 and and I got it for $29--which I paid for with a $25 gift card!). I love it. Warm as hell, right length, well made, and for some reason it's not dowdy on. Win, win, win, etc. And it only cost me $4 plus tax.

Well, I didn't say I was gonna buy it. Just that I fell in love. And I was ... joking. Yeah. Sort of. (But it was on a blue ground and totally wacky, and ...)

No, they're not budget. Although Land's End has some good sales--sometimes amazing sales. I have shopped there for well-made little-boy jeans, children's T-shirts, and my giant rain parka. The kids' clothes will last two seasons and don't rip open on trees etc.

No, you are not alone. In northern California, the professional class is taking a terrible beating. Almost every family I know is affected. I'm a freelancer and have seen my work down by half, owing to clients who've had to scale back their output and one who went out of business altogether. My husband and every employee in our school has had to strip back health-care coverage to major-medical only, plus take a substantial pay cut. The house we are renting (we sold our house prior to the crash, thank God) is in danger of being foreclosed. Now we must find a new house in 30 days' time, and will the owners even be able to pay us back our large deposit? And so on.

Many hardworking, talented people are facing huge challenges and losses, and generally not because they have done anything wrong.

So yeah, I do think the one button not to push right now is the one labeled "money." I'm not really down with the implication that if you need to buy things on a budget, you must be doing something wrong. I know people who were middle-class and jumping through all the hoops three years ago and are now destitute; I even know of one former professional person living in a tent by the river here. I just spent several days trying to help a friend who is now homeless with two small kids get into transitional housing.

I would never begrudge anyone for having money, but I feel that put-downs based on someone not having it are beyond insensitive.

    Fristly - Bravo.

My partner is in Haulage & its one fo the biggest areas hit. He's (at the moment) doing ok. I was in an IT related industry, plus I got sick at the wrong moment. I've been offered this job at 1/3rd less pay, but I'm having to wait 8 weeks while all the checks go through to actually start... At least I now have a job.

Good luck to your friend; I can't imagine being homeless with children.....

    2) Landsend. My winter coat in one of their -10 coats. Brilliant.

    3) More skirt-porn for you - again not cheap... but.... Womens-Skirts at Boden

I'm so glad you do have a job lined up!

Boden, aaaah. I am such a nerd!

I want the sixties wool mini, or maybe the velvet one with the giant polka dots.

LOL! I knew you'd love it!

I've been out of work for nearly a year. November 18th 2008 was my last work day.... They wanted to give me a perm job (I was contracting) then changed their minds when I told them I had cancer - bastards. Once I start working I'll be doing something about that, I can tell you!

Anyho... I still love TK Maxx even if my local one is crap. I've stopped buying clothes for the moment, I've made anything that I wanted/needed....
