They may CFDA award winners but as far as Peta is concerned, Mary Kate and Ashley Olson are simply 'The Trollsen Twins'.
The design duo behind fashion label, The Row, have angered animal rights activists following the release of a multicoloured, fur patchwork backpack.
At almost $17,000 the controversial accessory has prompted a statement from Peta criticising the sisters' design abilities and imagination.
Sartorial siblings: Sister team Mary Kate and Ashley Olson have come under fire from Peta for designing a $17,000 fur patchwork bag for their label, The Row
According to E! News, who received the outraged comments, Peta were not shy about expressing their feelings on the bag.
'If it looks like a troll and acts like a troll, it's probably a Trollsen Twin - or someone wearing one of their new $16,000 totes, which are made from the fur and skins of innocent animals,' read the missive.
It continued: 'What the Olsens lack in creativity, they try to make up for in shock value. Sadly, it's the foxes, calves, and alligators - who often have the fur ripped off them while they are still conscious and able to feel pain - who pay the dearest price.'
The Row designers do at least have one fan and an influential one at that, in stylist Rachel Zoe who touted the decadent bag as 'next season's staple' on her site, The Zoe Report.
Hiking anyone? The backpack costs a staggering $16,900 and is made from a variety of furs and colours
In her gushing review of the accessory however, she noticeably stays clear of describing the bag as fur, referring to the materials instead as 'fuzzy texture'.
Described on the fashion label's website as 'multi patchwork fur', product details include black shiny calf skin, slate shiny alligator and black alligator and straps appear to be made from some kind of black leather.
The dyed red and pink fur patches are unexplained as is the light brown trim peppered among the monochromatic black and white.
The ludicrously expensive fuzzy tote isn't the only item in the Pre-Fall collection from The Row that will no doubt anger the animal rights activists further.
An opulent fur coat, named 'Dropman Coat Multi' features patches of the same colour animal skins as does a stole that stylists for the catalogue have paired with a red velvet suit.
No one from The Row was available for comment.
