Default Calling all sewers / Hotpatterns users

I've recently ordered a new Hotpatterns pattern (see below) and wondered if anyone else had made it yet? If so do you have an hints & tips for me? I know that there are various blogs (etc) that make suggestions, but haven't seen any for this pattern.

I've had dresses & skirts from them before & they were fine (probably would have been better if I'd made them from a different fabric!), but this is much more structured.

I have made jackets & coats before, so that's ok.

I really like it. Are you doing it in denim?

OMG! That is so complicated looking! I would just sit down & cry if I had to sew that. OK. I can't sew,but still!

Honey, it'll be fine, I made this (below) at 16, it was my first jacket! (Mustard/Gold linen - and I'm dark haired & pale skined).

The trick is to handstitch the collar & roll it as you do it. I can tell for a distance handsewn suits & expensive but not bespoke ones....

do you use a dummy? or do you just do it flat and try it on yourself?

LOL! I AM a dummy.... Actually I have one but since I tack everything then try it on I don't use it as much as I should, I guess...

I'm not sure what you mean about "do it flat" tho.... I've been sewing for so long that I just add extra/minus extra with a chalk pencil, pins & a tape measure...

by 'do it flat' i just meant pin the cut pieces and try it on. i think i'm the dummy

i like it, the only part that might be slightly tricky is the topstich, but seeing what you could sew at 16, i doubt it will give you any trouble.

i like the blush color choice. as a young girl i really avoided pink, i thought it was uncool (black, black, and black were the only cool colors) but i love it now

Yeah, ditto - I got really sick of pink as a kid.
I'm trying to move into Denim colours, but pinks really suit my complection...

Yeah, I do the pin-it thing too sometimes but I got sick of being stuck, plus any number of my stuff has been from vintage patterns recently so that take a bit more care imo.

I wish I could sew...I tried to learn and just don't have the patience.

I hope you post a pic of the finished product!

Erm.. I guess it depends if/when I finish it! I have a bad rep for starting stuff & getting to the point of hemming/buttons & leaving it! I need a finisher, I guess....

I have a 1940s jackets on my dummy at the moment that just needs button holes (they're weird folded things) & hemming... maybe I'll do some more tonight.....

I got out my sewing skills this past weekend and realized how much I missed it. I have made a vow to myself to sit down a couple of hours each week and focus on a project.

I made a dress for saturday night today - red jersey, looks GREAT!

I've decided to make the biker style jacket out of black denim first of all. I'm quite tall so might need to add some length to it.
