The ten biggest fashion mistakes of 2008
Fashion faux pas of the year: American Vogue Editor Anna Wintour arrives at the Costume Institute Gala, Superheroes: Fashion and Fantasy
Style queen Anna Wintour committed the biggest fashion faux pas of 2008.
The futuristic Chanel gown worn by the Vogue editor at a New York fashion event topped the list of the worst outfits compiled by prestigious Time magazine.
Wintour wore the Karl Lagerfield designed dress to what is described as New York's party of the year, was held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in May.
She was host of the £3,000 a head bash which attracted dozens of celebrities, including Tom Cruise, his wife Katie Holmes, George Clooney and the Beckhams.
But with her silver dress, which one critic described as a cast off from the sci-fi film Dune, Wintour stole the show.
It also earned her the top spot on Time magazine's list of fashion faux pas beating out outfits chosen by Madonna, Janet Jackson and Gwyneth Paltrow.
Commenting on the dress, the magazine said: 'When the history of modern fashion is written, this will be its Waterloo.
'The unimpeachably stylish Vogue editor Anna Wintour turns up at the fashion event of the year, the Met's Costume Institute Gala in New York City, in a dress that makes her look as if she were encrusted with giant fossils.
'Fashionistas, how they love to look old.'
The event was based around the opening of the Costume Institute's exhibition, “Superheroes: Fashion and Fantasy.”
Wintour, 59, is known as a fashion icon on both sides of the Atlantic and in her position as Vogue editor can make or break a fashion house.
She is known for her distinctive pageboy bob haircut and insistence on always wearing sunglasses.
Second place: Janet Jackson performs on stage during her 'Rock Witchu' tour
Third: Project Runway winner Christian Siriano at the Sex And The City premiere
The Meryl Streep character in the Hollywood film The Devil Wears Prada is widely believed to be based on her.
The film was adapted from the book of the same name written by one of her former assistants.
A glittery futuristic outfit worn by singer Janet Jackson came second on the fashion faux pas list in the latest issue of Time.
Fourth: Gwyneth Paltrow arrives at the 'Two Lovers' Paris Premiere in a strange see-through maid outfit
Fifth: Kate Bosworth attends a Chanel event in vintage Chanel Haute Couture
Actress Gwyneth Paltrow came in fourth with the transparent lace basque Antonio Berardi dress she donned at the Paris premiere of Two Lovers in November.
The ensemble - which showed part of her breasts, thighs and even her white underwear - was slammed by fashionistas.
Position number seven was awarded to Katie Holmes for the white silk jumpsuit and black lacy top combination she wore to the opening of her play All My Sons last month.
Sixth: Beyonce Knowles visits MTV's TRL at the MTV studios in Times Square, New York in October
Seventh: Katie Holmes wears her own design to the opening of her play All My Sons in Manhattan
Surprisingly the badly-received outfit wasn't the fault of an expensive designer; it was designed by Mrs Cruise herself.
Others in the top ten include Paula Abdul, Kate Bosworth and Beyonce.
Editors at Time magazine compiled the list for their 'Top Ten of Everything' edition.
Eighth: Singer and American Idol judge Paula Abdul pictured at the 2008 NCLR Alma awards
Ninth: American Gladiator Don 'Hollywood' Yates at the Academy Of Country Music Awards
Tenth: Madonna in a green Louis Vuitton ensemble at a Gucci UNICEF dinner last month
Biggest fashion faux pas of 2008 goes to... Vogue editor and style icon Anna Wintour | Mail Online

What a sad state of affairs when Paula Abdul's dress is not the worst.
Her dress looks great compared to the rest.

Anna Wintour must be going senile. That outfit embarrassed me FOR her. Janet Jackson just looked laughable.
Notice how all the losers were the "futuristic" outfits (with maybe the exception of Madonna's lawn clippings dress)?
I agree--Paula's, while an eyesore, looks not so hideous compared to the others. It's just an LSD Barbie ensemble, easily forgotten once you sober up.

I really like Anna Wintour's Costume Institute Ball gown, and Kate Bosworth's silver outfit isn't half bad - she pulls it off. Out of these, I think Gwyneth's and Madonna's are the worst.

Solange was robbed. She absolutely deserves to be on this list.

I liked green on Madonna. I thought she looked better there than her usual all black severe outfits.

i like anna wintour and gwyneth paltrow's outfits.
the theme this year at the costume institute gala was superheroes. but few people respected that. most went in boring, traditional, mainstream evening gowns. wintour was one of the few that dared to be different and i think she pulled it off.
i also like gwynnie's futuristic maid dress. it's sassy.
the rest definitely suck.

I think there are lots worse things than Anna Wintour and Kate Bosworth's outfits on here. Maybe I'm Chanel-biased?

I would like to add one to the list: remember that nasty lilac dress that Asian actress wore with the pom-poms all over it?? I don't know if I can find it . . .

I don't think Janet should be 2nd. Yes, it's horrible, but it's a stage costume, most of those are hideous.
Where's Rihanna?

^^ Haha! I'd forgotten about those. Also, sputnik, I didn't realize the theme was "superheroes" so yeah, I give a lot of those costumes (they're not really anything else) a pass.
Bridget's outfit looks pretty normal for her (above). Considering her whole persona, it looks like what I'd expect her to show up in. Silly but lighthearted.
