I was told that there would be no math on this thread.

You shut up and go back to watching The Satire.

I guess that this is another one of those topics, I just don't get. But how does "religion" get such a stronghold over in another country, such as Britian. Why or how does that happen? It's as if the character needs to be initially examined before opening such an institution.
If this helps, private schools in England & Wales (i.e. not including Scotland & N Ireland) are subject to both regulatory checks prior to opening and after opening.
All schools private or public must teach the curriculum as perscribed by the Govt* - however, Privately funded schools can also teach other subjects (e.g. muslim funded schools teach Islamic studies; fundimentally christian schools teach that Darwin was wrong, etc etc.). Believe me there was an equal outcry over the christian fundimentalists.
However, I also know that there are certain private schools within England that are operating illegally (i.e. shouldn't be taking pupils due to lack of adherance to fire regs etc), and I can't remember if this is one of them....±
* The head stated that she decided the curriculum, which is either a lie or illegal....
Hope this helps.
(oh & i don't think that "religion has a stronghold" here, it's just that this is a news-worthly topic. There were approx 14 muslim schools in England about a year ago. Out of a total of 40K schools....)
± Having had a root around, this doesn't appear to be one of them.

Welcome to Great Britain 2007. Of course people are outraged but these religious fanatics get away with it because it's all part of the warm, fuzzy world of multiculturalism that everyone is supposed to embrace (increasingly enshrined in law) and anyone who raises any concerns or objections is labelled a racist or bigot and can often be prosecuted for it.

The UK can embrace multiculturalism, but it NEEDS hate speech laws NOW.

As with someone of a Muslimn background, I agree with Mira on this. They should definetly PULL OUT these textbooks from these children.
Wahhabism is a fundamental and fanatic sect and does not represent true Islam. These are the same people that even look as Muslim Shiites as heretics. Let us not forget the Kindgom's hypocrisy and how they are known for being raging alcoholics and into prostitution. Sickening. Disgusting. Vile.
Of couse, there a lot of moderate Muslims out there, it is just that I find the Western media is not giving them a platform. The Western media just looks to stereotype Islam as this "foreign", "fanatic", kind of civlization and culture. It is to serve the bogus "War on Terror" to create this clash of civilizations.
I think the Middle East is not as developed not as much because of religion, but rather because of lack of progress as a result of poverty, high illiteracy rates, wars, etc. So that why they stay and delve into these societal traditions. And oh, let us not forget their dictatorship and brutal governments. Before more progress and development to take place as well as more free-thinking and modernity, you need more education, economic progress and better development. As long as that does not happen, they will stay as they are.
Also, let us not forget who give foot to these fundamentalists. It was the Western colonial powers. For example, Britian funded the Muslim Brotherhood since the 1920s, Westenr powers like the U.S. funded Bin Laden's compagnons and mujahideens during the Afghanistan-Soviet war, and now are STILL kissing ass to the Wahabbists. They claim to be fighting this evil radical Islam when they are sleeping in bed with these fanatics and are in part also which give them the power to be what they are. Western powers are not ALL to blame for fanatical Islam, but back then and now, they are in part to what made them rise out of their ashes.
I disagree on this in some ways. I think under the Shah, women were not as free as under the Islamic Republic. Ok, did not have to wear veils, but still Iranians had no freedom of speech. Women in Iran now have very good access to education still from the days of the Shah, and even I think in the Middle East, maybe besides Israel (?) hold the most out of other women in other neighboring countries,a lot of high government positions and are very involved in the workforce.
But yes, the Islamic Republic of Iran still has a long way to go to be completely "modernized" in our sense of the word.
