Muslim women don't have to wear veils: Queen Rania - Yahoo! News
Islam does not require women to wear veils, Queen Rania al-Abdullah of Jordan has said in an interview, calling on Muslim moderates to "make their voices be heard."
"Islam neither requires one to be practising, nor to dress in one way or another," the stylish 36-year-old queen told the Italian daily Corriere della Sera during a visit to Rome on Friday.
"So imposing the veil on a woman is contrary to the principles of Islam," said Queen Rania, who is in Rome for the launch of a Group of Seven (G7) programme to develop vaccines against diseases that are endemic in poor countries.
"Unfortunately, after all the suspicion weighing on Islam, many people have begun to consider the veil as a political problem, but this is not the case," she told Corriere. "Wearing the veil is a free personal choice."
Queen Rania urged "all moderates to stand up and let their voices be heard."
She added: "Many people are frustrated in the Arab world. Many give in to the anger because they are accused of violence. But instead we should get up, explain who we are and what we believe in.
"Over the last three years, most victims of terrorism have been Muslim. So there's not a war between Muslims and non-Muslims, but between extremists and moderates of all the religions," the queen said.
"What is important is not to live in fear. The most dangerous (thing to do) is to give up and lose hope. The main enemy is not terrorism or extremism, but ignorance," she said.

Good on her for coming out and saying it. So many people consider it such a sacred thing, as if wearing the veil is the make and break point of your morality.A lot of people will attack her though no doubt, it's so deeply embedded in the culture that most ppl are completely convinced that it's a divine order not up for debate without doing any research themselves. Just yesterday , I was telling a girl how much I hated niqab (face covering) and she told me that I shouldn't say that because those women are so much better than the rest of us and O so brave. Of course if I had mentioned I hated and didn't believe in the necessity of the veil as well, it would've been nothing less than scandalous for me.

That's sad that some people think a woman's worth is dependent on her to choice to wear a veil/headdress or not.

My respect for her has doubled.
Imposing the veil is unjust, as is banning it. Let women choose what they want.

I haven't checked them out Kris but I bet they resemble something from the 1800's. I wonder how many women fell into the water and drowned trying to swim wearing all that heavy shit?
Apparently to some the human body is so "dirty" that it is your responsibility to cover it, lest someone else be tempted. I knew a person once who was Pentecostal and this was basically how it was explained to me. So if you give some dude a boner the sin is on you too.
Nevermind that you could be fully clothed in accordance with your religion's rules and minding your own business and some perv could still be whacking off to you (or at least having lustful thoughts) five feet away. She didn't have an answer for that scenario (naturally).

Oh, MrsDark, you must go to the Duggars website and check out the swimwear. It looks like smocks and jumpers. Just insane stuff. There also a "burqkini" that I've seen some place before. It's a swimsuit/burqua. Lovely, just lovely

I agree with her. The hijab was never imposed in the Qur'an. It was even a cultural Jewish tradition which then Arab female Middle Easterners took on. I can even debate those who say IT IS mandatory as the Qur'anic passages say.I can take those passages and prove them wrong from MY interpretations. It was probably Islamic scholars along the way that installed this notion of hijab being mandatory. But as I say, let it be a woman'c choice to wear it or not and it is NOT obligatory.
