Since this is a pretty liberal forum with many open minds registered I was just wondering in hind sight
What do you all think of Sinead O'Connor ripping up the Pope's pic?
back when she did in the early 90's on SNL.
I remember I was young, but still agreed w/ her basic POV, but I understood all the hoopla around it as well...what can I say though; I've always loved controversial women w/ something to say and believe it or not; I've been an atheist since as long as I could remember.

Bad career move, but I applaud her forthrightness. She wasn't afraid to speak her mind even if it cost her.

I never saw it, but to this day, I can't understand what the fuss was about. He's a public, somewhat political figure whose decisions affect millions, and he stands for an archaic beliefs system, of course people are going to criticize him, and that criticism has a myriad of ways to be expressed.
Big fat hairy deal.

Imagine if it had been a picture of the Prophet Mohammed.

The Catholic church has been responsible for so many deaths in the past, as well as present. They won't give aid to groups that try to promote safe sex, nor work with any groups that accept money or birth control from companies that do. So if there are groups going to help out in poor countries, they aren't allowed to bring condoms with them that might help stop diseases or lower the number of babies that are going to starve to death from lack of food.
Bah, that's just one thing. I don't believe that the pope has any better standing than anyone else.

I remember it well - thousands of militant Catholics went on the rampage burning down Irish embassies all over the world threatening murder and bloodshed and then whined that people had the wrong idea about Catholicism.

I heard that the actual footage was destroyed. I think that people overreacted.
edit: Ripping up the popes picture did ruin her career.

It is unfortunate that she judged the Catholic power base without realizing
how influential it could be. Christopher Hitchens made a documentary
that was critical of Mother Teresa and it will never be shown in the
USA because Catholics exercise a great deal of control over the media.
Sinead was only 24, so how would she have realized that?

Because at the time it happened she was having some kind of mental breakdown and blamed it on her fucked up Irish Catholic upbringing. She subsequently became 'ordained' into some kind of Catholic splinter 'church' and has not really been seen again.

^ not the best picture of her but she is a beautiful woman and i think she looked great bald. she seems a very strong and strong minded woman, she has an amazing voice and i really like her!
about ripping up the Pope picture... i never understood all the fuss (and i don't understand the fuss about the prophet mohammed caricature - people are dying because of offended pride. who f***ing stupid is that).
so many people are such hypocrites, all these "good catholics" that despised her for doing that but then they beat their wife and childern, have a lover,...

She had the right to say what she felt, but she kicked her own ass by acting out on national tv and on the worst television show too.
