Why the low pants Generation Y?

Dear Miley, Avril, Abercrombie and/or Fitch, and the late Mr. Levi Strauss,

I call on you people because you are who dresses the Generation known as Y. I have a question for you and other clothes makers of today: Why do you make your clothes so our children’s butt crack sticks out even with the use of a belt?

It’s hard to find a decent pair of jeans that will last for a junior-sized body. A tween and teenager of today is not going to shove their budding body into a pair of belly button-rise jeans that us mommies are more comfortable wearing. The youth of today prefer those tiny little hip-huggers that when I hold them up to me I wonder if I’d have to shave certain pieces and parts of me just to wear. All of the jeans built for a narrow-hipped junior these days are far too low. What’s so great about the butt crack that you people feel that kids these days should just let it all hang out? It’s a butt crack. It’s mere inches above their poopers. It is still a private part of their body. Couldn’t you add just a few inches to the butt part of the jeans so everything would be covered?

You know, back in my days of being a junior-sized person (and oh, those were the days) jean-makers would make the back of the jeans just slightly higher than the front so the jeans would still go below the naval. I have to admit that it is more comfortable to wear jeans that are lower in the front since it makes for better mobility. Having the knowledge that if I should happen to stoop over my butt will remain inside the jeans is a real plus in my book. Half the time, the jeans can be almost ugly but if my butt stays put, then I’m buying them.

I’m tired of running around the house yelling, “Your ass sets are showing,” as a way to alert my girls that their bums are sticking out. I think my girls are adorable, but I really like to see them fully clothed. If my husband had his way the girls wouldn’t leave the house in anything less than a full turtleneck and ribcage high pants. I’m not about punishing the youth of the day, but am just trying to reach a compromise between the parents and Generation Y.

I know that times have greatly changed since I was a teenager but have they really changed this much that we’re making it okay for our girls to go around with their butts exposed. I remember my mother asking me if I was going to wear “that” out of the house. Usually “that” meant a baggy pair of jeans paired with an even baggier shirt. She used to tell me, “If you’ve got it, flaunt it.” Have the designers of those days finally taken my mother’s advice and ran with it? Things here are going a bit too far and way too low. Even a pair of pants that fit “properly” are showing too much rear cleavage. Are you making our kids the butt of some joke or something?

If you people are going to continue to make your jeans this way, could you at least reinforce the belt loops since this is how my girls pull their pants back up? Better yet, could you put a handle on the pants so the girls have something to hold on to while they walk around the mall and text their friends? I’m two steps away from sticking long-stemmed roses down the next butt crack I see.

Abercrombie is worn out and quickly fading

abercrombie-is-worn-out-and-quickly-fading: Personal Finance News from Yahoo! Finance (http://finance.yahoo.com/career-work/article/108199/abercrombie-is-worn-out-and-quickly-fading)

Since I listed five reasons to sell (http://www.minyanville.com/articles/retail-apparel-stocks-abercrombie-gap-american-eagle/index/a/24080) Abercrombie & Fitch back in August, the retail stock has risen another 32%. Year to date, the stock is up over 75%. And what really takes the cake is Goldman Sachs and Credit Suisse both upgraded Abercrombie earlier this month.
I'm far from ashamed of my recommendation. Abercrombie is a teeny-bopping train wreck. Posting third-quarter results that were once again much worse than its peers, Abercrombie has problems unrelated to the recession. The downturn has just exasperated it. And I want to reiterate my extreme bearishness toward the retailer.
Abercrombie was once as popular among Wall Street analysts as it was throughout the halls of high schools across the country. A genius management team slapped a moose logo on basic, preppy attire and successfully convinced fashion enthusiastic teens to pay huge premiums for its merchandise. The result led to gross margins surpassing 66% -- unheard of in the retail industry -- and alluring growth.
But all good things come to an end and Abercrombie's strategy became outdated. The company has failed to adapt to evolving trends and -- gasp -- can't sell the same exact sweatshirt lined with the word ABERCROMBIE today that it sold a decade ago. In fact, I saw nearly the same coat being sold that I purchased more than five seasons ago.
With 12 straight quarters of double-digit comps under its belt now, Wall Street has attributed poor performance to management not properly playing out the recession by not running steep promotions.
I disagree. Abercrombie was right to not run around its stores with red pens slashing ticket prices. As I've mentioned before, that's a brand-killing technique that will come back to haunt the retailers that have implemented that tactic. Of course, desperate Abercrombie eventually jumped on the markdown bandwagon and is now not only facing a plummeting top line but also a slimming gross margin.
Abercrombie's problem wasn't that it was too late to the discount party. It was because its style has become irrelevant among today's funky and more mature dressing youth. As Urban Outfitters and True Religion have proven, retailers can maintain their premium prices and uphold their high-end brand status if they offer unique and funkier merchandise. And J.Crew is an ideal example of how a preppy retailer has successfully adapted its style to remain relevant.
During booming times, Abercrombie was able to keep its top line buoyant by expanding its store base. And of course, shoppers were buying up merchandise from about any retailer as cash was freely flowing from their wallets. In tight times, however, consumers are more conservative with their purchases and carefully select items they find valuable.
Some refer to Abercrombie as an iconic retailer. I see it as an iconic brand that has been laid to rest in a vault labeled "turn of the century fashion." Abercrombie's sales started sagging in 2006 before even the slightest sign of this recession was visible.
I've stated before that the retail industry will continue to shrink until supply starts to match new demand levels. With fewer dollars to go around, the weakest links will get weeded out.
Like the jeans hanging behind the navy shutter doors of every retail outlet, the Abercrombie brand looks worn out and I don't see any chance of its problems being patched up.
Investors can follow the money on this stock. But consider yourself warned that this investment will prove a major fashion flop in the long run -- it already is in the fashion world.

MOCA Anniversary Gala Fashion

Image: http://www.redcarpet-fashionawards.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/moca-chloe-sevigny.jpg
This event has got to be one of the Best Dressed events I’ve ever seen, as everyone made a magnificent effort.
I’ve never been one to go gaga over Chloe Sevigny, but I absolutely LOVE her in this Miu Miu Spring 2010 dress.
It’s something only the likes of Chloe and Zooey Deschanel could pull off without looking like a grown woman dressing childishly.
Her bejewelled turtle neck dress is so playful and dainty, plus I love her neutral accessories which complement her dress well.

Image: http://www.redcarpet-fashionawards.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/moca-kate-beckinsale.jpg
*Sighs*
Kate Beckinsale blew me away at this event.
I love the way her midnight green asymmetrical Andrew GN Spring 2010 gown appears to snake around her toned body.
The draping is magnificent, the embellished belt and shoulder detail adds texture and the look is pulled together with an elegant updo.
This is one of my favourite looks from Kate.

Image: http://www.redcarpet-fashionawards.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/moca-christina-ricci.jpg
Christina Ricci wasn’t brave enough to wear the runway version of this Prada Spring 2010 cloque baby doll dress, but she settled on a forest green modified version which she accented with a silver waist band.
Christina isn’t shy at taking risks, but baring her panties at this event wouldn’t have been quite appropriate.
Is it me or does Christina change her hair colour every time she hits the red carpet?

Image: http://www.redcarpet-fashionawards.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/moca-jessica-alba.jpg
Jessica Alba’s also opted for a Prada Spring 2010 cloque halter dress.
Looking at the closet match to the runway, I would have preferred her to have worn the runway look as it’s far more interesting.
Red satin Prada heels and a red velvet Prada Velluto Sere clutch from the Fall 2009 (http://www.style.com/fashionshows/detail/slideshow/F2009RTW-PRADA?event=show1922&designer=design_house63&trend=&iphoto=22) collection complete this rather tame look.

Image: http://www.redcarpet-fashionawards.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/moca-eva-mendes.jpg
It looks like what we saw on the Prada and Miu Miu Spring 2010 runway’s may not be exactly what we will see in the boutique’s.
Eva Mendes’ Miu Miu Spring 2010 black and beige dress, takes the jewel embroidered detail from the runway look to perfect her sexy sheath dress.
I adore her look, especially the hair accessory which adds a bit of pizazz to her classy updo.
The edgier runway version wouldn’t have quite worked for her.

Image: http://www.redcarpet-fashionawards.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/lfi_moca060.jpg
Normally I can match a dress to a celebrity the moment I see it on the runway, which also helps me memorize runway looks.
This Marchesa Spring 2010 embroidered black tulle gown with draped sleeves looks like it was made for Shirley Manson, despite that fact that I would never have consider her for this stunning gown.
The singer gives the gown a romantic Gothic vibe I don’t believe Georgina Chapman was going for, but Shirley really works this look.

Image: http://www.redcarpet-fashionawards.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/moca-daisy-fuentes.jpg
Daisy Fuentes saw the magic which Gustavo Cadile created for Catherine Zeta-Jones last week, and created it for herself wearing one of his luscious gowns.
I love the amethyst colour of her Spring 2009 halter chiffon gown, which is slightly modified from the runway as hers has jeweled straps.
This would’ve been the reason she pulled back her hair, so we could see that stunning detail.

Image: http://www.redcarpet-fashionawards.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/lfi_moca112.jpg
Last week Lady GaGa and Carine Roitfeld (http://www.redcarpet-fashionawards.com/2009/11/12/celebrities-loveshowing-us-their-panties/) opted for risque looks from Dolce & Gabbana’s Spring 2010 collection, but Gwen Stefani opted for something less revealing.
The singer walked the red carpet with her husband wearing a white bustier with a black lace trim, paired with tapered pants from the same collection.
Sexy strappy sandals completed her look.

Image: http://www.redcarpet-fashionawards.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/moca-zoe-saldana.jpg
I keep looking at Zoe Saldana’s strapless Marchesa Spring 2010 tulle column gown with sequin detail and keep thinking that something is missing.
I think a waist band, either contrasting or the same colour of the gown would have given her more of a defined waist.

Image: http://www.redcarpet-fashionawards.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/moca-carine.jpg
I’m so thankful Carine Roitfeld removed all those OTT silver embellishments from her Balmain Spring 2009 as they were overkill.
The dress is much more appealing without all that bling, and I’m a girl who love a bit of bling.
Christian Louboutin Supra Fifre 120 thigh-high boots (http://www.redcarpet-fashionawards.com/2009/08/24/in-lindsay-lohans-closet-christian-louboutin-supra-fifre-120-thigh-high-boots/) complete this effortless look.

Image: http://www.redcarpet-fashionawards.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/moca-kate-bosworth.jpg
Unlike most of the others on this red carpet, Kate Bosworth doesn’t really rock my world.
Her animal print Proenza Schouler Spring 2010 dress is nice enough, but she could’ve blown us away with much more interesting pieces from this collection.

Image: http://www.redcarpet-fashionawards.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/moca-rose-mcgowan.jpg
I will always love how Rose McGowan always gives us va-va-voom.
Jessica Rabbit eat your heart own.
Rose’s red Donna Karan Pre-Fall 2009 gown is so sensual and divine.
Of course she adds a red lip to her look.
My only criticism is that she would have looked a hell of a lot better with her hair pulled back.

Image: http://www.redcarpet-fashionawards.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/20091114_paf_f05_071.jpg
Fashionista Liz Goldwyn always likes to wear the unexpected.
Her fruity watermelon Sonia Rykiel Spring 2010 jumpsuit was paired with a dazzling pair of heels from the same collection.

Image: http://www.redcarpet-fashionawards.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/prada.jpg
Miuccia Prada makes her self designed Prada Spring 2010 dress more wearable, by adding a shirt dress under her chandelier-styled crystal embroidered dress.

Image: http://www.redcarpet-fashionawards.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/91114a3_mulligan_b-gr_01.jpg
Carey Mulligan was also wearing Prada, like so many others.
The Oscar hopeful donned a heavily embroidered (http://www.style.com/fashionshows/detail/slideshow/S2010RTW-PRADA?event=show1982&designer=design_house63&trend=&iphoto=45) Prada Spring 2010 dress paired with shoes with a clear heel from the same collection.
She just keeps getting it right. I predict hope she blows us away this coming Awards season.

Image: http://www.redcarpet-fashionawards.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/moca-marsia-tomei.jpg
One person who never lets me down on the red carpet is Marisa Tomei.
I’m just loving this burst of colour.
The actress wore a 1950s Jean Desses Haute Couture bubble-gum pink cocktail dress from Decades Inc (http://decadesinc.blogspot.com/2009/02/bubble-licious.html).
Boucheron jewels and a Leiber purse complete this outstanding look.
This is one I will come back to drool over again and again.

Image: http://www.redcarpet-fashionawards.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/moca-rachel-zoe.jpg
Rachel Zoe opted for a one-shouldered Pucci gown

Image: http://www.redcarpet-fashionawards.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/moca-ciara.jpg
Ciara might have been wearing those fierce Christian Louboutin studded pigalle’s (http://www.redcarpet-fashionawards.com/2009/09/02/christian-louboutin-studded-pigalle-pumps-on-sale-at-net-a-porter/) but the rest of her look is really disappointing.
When so many stepped outside the box, or wowed us with drama and colour Ciara’s look is very blah and uninspired.

Image: http://www.redcarpet-fashionawards.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/moca-angelina-jolie2.jpg
Mr & Mrs Snoozeville were there also.
She was wearing Armani Prive.

Last week Lady GaGa and Carine Roitfeld opted for risque looks from Dolce & Gabbana’s Spring 2010 collection, but Gwen Stefani opted for something less revealing.
The singer walked the red carpet with her husband wearing a white bustier with a black lace trim, paired with tapered pants from the same collection.
Sexy strappy sandals completed her look.

I keep looking at Zoe Saldana’s strapless Marchesa Spring 2010 tulle column gown with sequin detail and keep thinking that something is missing.
I think a waist band, either contrasting or the same colour of the gown would have given her more of a defined waist.

I’m so thankful Carine Roitfeld removed all those OTT silver embellishments from her Balmain Spring 2009 as they were overkill.
The dress is much more appealing without all that bling, and I’m a girl who love a bit of bling.
Christian Louboutin Supra Fifre 120 thigh-high boots complete this effortless look.

Unlike most of the others on this red carpet, Kate Bosworth doesn’t really rock my world.
Her animal print Proenza Schouler Spring 2010 dress is nice enough, but she could’ve blown us away with much more interesting pieces from this collection.

Fashionista Liz Goldwyn always likes to wear the unexpected.
Her fruity watermelon Sonia Rykiel Spring 2010 jumpsuit was paired with a dazzling pair of heels from the same collection.

Miuccia Prada makes her self designed Prada Spring 2010 dress more wearable, by adding a shirt dress under her chandelier-styled crystal embroidered dress.

Carey Mulligan was also wearing Prada, like so many others.
The Oscar hopeful donned a heavily embroidered Prada Spring 2010 dress paired with shoes with a clear heel from the same collection.
She just keeps getting it right. I predict hope she blows us away this coming Awards season.

One person who never lets me down on the red carpet is Marisa Tomei.
I’m just loving this burst of colour.
The actress wore a 1950s Jean Desses Haute Couture bubble-gum pink cocktail dress from Decades Inc.
Boucheron jewels and a Leiber purse complete this outstanding look.
This is one I will come back to drool over again and again.

Rachel Zoe opted for a one-shouldered Pucci gown

Ciara might have been wearing those fierce Christian Louboutin studded pigalle’s but the rest of her look is really disappointing.
When so many stepped outside the box, or wowed us with drama and colour Ciara’s look is very blah and uninspired.

Mr & Mrs Snoozeville were there also.
She was wearing Armani Prive.

Rent the Runway: Couture a la Netflix!

Don't want to spend thousands for a couture gown but still want to wear it? No worries! Thanks to two enterprising Harvard women, you now only pay around $50 or more to Rent the Runway and then return it in their own package! LOVE THIS IDEA!!!

"The mail-order service, which finishes the testing phase on Monday, allows women to rent dresses from notable fashion designers like Diane Von Furstenberg (http://topics.nytimes.com/top/reference/timestopics/people/v/diane_von_furstenberg/index.html?inline=nyt-per), Hervé Léger and Proenza Schouler (http://topics.nytimes.com/top/reference/timestopics/organizations/p/proenza_schouler/index.html?inline=nyt-per) for roughly one-tenth of what they would cost to buy in a retail store.
The rentals run $50 to $200 for a four-night loan and are shipped directly to the customer’s doorstep. After wearing the dress, she puts it into a prepaid envelope and drops it in the mail. Dry cleaning is included in the price, but damage insurance costs $5, and in the case of outright destruction of the dress, the renter is responsible for the full retail price."

The trend emerged on the Fall 2009 runways of designers like Missoni (knit snoods) and Burberry (plaid snoods) and also made an appearance in the commercial collections of Donna Karan and Yves Saint Laurent. Now it's gone mainstream, with retailers ranging from American Apparel to Zara getting behind the loopy style with snoods of varying lengths and monikers. The British version of GQ magazine's Web site recently posted a "Guide to Snoods," suggesting wearers try it "over a chunky knit or tailored jacket."
A few weeks ago Bloomingdale's urged customers to "make sure that you're seen in this lavish new accessory." Henri Bendel ranked the snood second amongst its top ten "things we fancy for fall" while Saks Fifth Avenue included it in its "Want It" fall campaign. "Gossip Girl" star Blake Lively was photographed in one on the show's set last month.

Net-a-Porter.com (http://net-a-porter.com/)'s buying director Holli Rogers confesses she was skeptical the site would sell many snoods last summer, when the site had a month-long exclusive to sell a Burberry purple-and-black plaid style. The item is already on reorder, and the company is now pitching several styles.
Burberry, whose chief financial officer recently cited the snood as one of the top drivers of the company's fall accessories sales, attributes the snood's rise to consumers' desire for safety in tumultuous times. "I love this idea of protection that it gives," says the brand's creative director Christopher Bailey, who was so into the look that he showed snoods for men and women on almost every model at his fall 2009 runway show. Simon Kneen, creative director for Gap Inc.'s Banana Republic brand, also likened the accessory to "a Linus blanket," a reference to the blue security blanket always carried by the Peanuts cartoon character.
Angela Missoni, creative director of the Italian fashion label Missoni, said the look was a way to "stay true to Missoni's knitwear roots while creating something new" and calls the snood "a lavish play on layering." "It's handy," adds Brooke Scott, Bloomingdale's fashion director for accessories, who identified snoods as one of two top holiday trends. "If you get hot, you don't have to remove it" because it can remain around the neck.

Amid the downturn, the rush to the snood reflects the fashion industry's scramble to invent new types of clothing that consumers don't already possess. Sales of scarves and mufflers, a relatively cheap way to freshen an outfit, have been strong, generating $540 million in sales through August, a 21% increase over the same period last year, according to NPD Group.
Traditional snoods, which resembled hairnets, were popular in the 1940s when women used them to keep their long hair out of the way. In the 1950s, the snood morphed into a tube, which became a ski-slope staple, says Beth Dincuff Charleston, a professor and fashion historian at Parsons, the New School for Design in New York. This time around, the style has been transformed: The creation of snoods in colorful plaids, fur and prints, as opposed to just polar fleece, renders them "new and fresh," says Ms. Dincuff.
As much as they love its look, many retailers, particularly in the U.S., aren't as in love with the snood's name, which can sound more like a Dr. Seuss character than a hot fashion item. Designer Chan Luu sells "infinity loops"; American Apparel hawks "circle scarves" and Banana Republic pitches an "infinity scarf" as does the Limited, which offers its scarves in 12 colors. The word snood "sounds like something that has been woken out of sleep," says Banana Republic's Mr. Kneen. An infinity scarf "is an endless piece that's timeless with a twist."
Burberry's Mr. Bailey is sticking with snood. "It's a very British name for it, which feels more relevant to what inspired us and to what we stand for," he says.
Rachel Kirson, a 24-year-old teacher from Manalapan, N. J., says she got her first glimpse of the snood in a magazine over the summer. "I have fallen in love with them," says Ms. Kirson, who has been looking for a snood in charcoal-grey with a horizontal cable knit for herself; she is planning on giving snoods as gifts for the holidays. "I like wearing bold jewelry so the snood is almost a necklace for the winter months."

So, when one half of the world's best dressed twin sister design team (that'd be Ashley Olsen (http://www.glamour.com/beauty/blogs/girls-in-the-beauty-department/2009/06/what-do-you-think-of-ashley-ol.html)), the world's only Pulitizer Prize-winning fashion writer (The Washington Post's Robin Givhan), and the--dare I say it!--pioneer who was the first-ever designer to do a line for Target (none other than Isaac Mizrahi (http://www.glamour.com/fashion/blogs/slaves-to-fashion/2009/07/isaac-mizrahi-is-coming-to-qvc.html)) all get together on a random Wednesday night in New York City, what do you they talk about? Football, fetishes, and cheesecake, of course! Oh and...FASHION. Read all about it, after the jump.
Earlier this evening at the 92nd Street Y (http://www.92y.org/shop/event_detail.asp?productid=T-LC5CA03), our own Editor-in-Chief, Cindi Leive, moderated a panel discussion on the future of women's fashion, with Olsen, Mizrahi, and Givhan all lending their serious expertise to such topics as why models are so skinny, who women are really dressing for, and the Michelle Obama effect. You can get the play-by-play from our Twitter feed now (http://twitter.com/glamour_fashion), but we've got even more juicy scoop straight from the event right here.
    Image: http://mtblog.glamour.com/fashion/blogs/slaves-to-fashion/2009/10/22/1022ashley-olsen-isaac-mizrahi-backstage_fa.jpg
I was lucky enough to snag a few minutes backstage with the esteemed panel before the event began, and I asked Ashley (effortlessly chic as ever in a dress from The Row--"It's a production sample!" she told me--a black Chanel boucle jacket, and insane burgundy suede platform heels) how she wound up on this stage tonight, talking shop with these industry bigwigs. "I'm actually not very comfortable with public speaking, and that was something I told myself I'd work on--getting out more and doing some public speaking. And given who was involved with this and everything, I decided this was just a great opportunity. I'm honored," she told me, as Mary-Kate Olsen, who came to show her support to her twin sister and business partner, sat just a few feet away.
The panelists took to the stage in the 92nd Street Y's sold-out auditorium a few minutes later, and they touched on everything from why models are so skinny (http://www.glamour.com/fashion/blogs/slaves-to-fashion/2008/09/the-skinny-model-debate-rages.html) (Robin Givhan said that while American women are getting bigger, models are getting smaller because fashion wants to maintain its "rarefied air" and serve as the opposition to what's going on in the rest of the world) to the Michelle Obama effect (http://www.glamour.com/fashion/blogs/slaves-to-fashion/2009/10/loving-her-look-michelle-obama-2.html) (it's major, according to Mizrahi) to just who we women are dressing for (one theory: each other). My favorite moment of the night came when Cindi posed this question to the panelists: "Why do people love to hate fashion?"
  Image: http://mtblog.glamour.com/fashion/blogs/slaves-to-fashion/2009/10/22/1022future-of-fashion-panel_fa2.jpg
And that's when Robin said something completely genius that will prevent me from ever looking at a football field in precisely the same way. "It's just really easy to hate," she said. "In the U.S. we don't think of fashion in the same category with other visual arts. People condescend to fashion because it's a woman's industry. Nobody would really ever say that spending thousands of dollars a year on football season tickets is ridiculous!" Isaac jumped right in a second later with, "Misogyny rears its ugly head again!" As a card-carrying feminist, I must admit...I'm afraid they're totally right.
As for the future of fashion...Isaac admitted that there are practically no taboos left on the planet, and a designer who makes great things can now sell them just about anywhere. He was one of the first designers to plunge into the cheap-chic thing with his line for Target way back in 2001, and he'll be heading to QVC this winter (http://www.glamour.com/fashion/blogs/slaves-to-fashion/2009/07/isaac-mizrahi-is-coming-to-qvc.html) to sell everything from handbags to cheesecakes. "You just kind of ask yourself, 'What is perverted? What is something I could never, ever do?' And then you do that!" Ashley, who reminded the audience that she and her sister's very first clothing line was at Wal-Mart, completely agreed. "We were able to bring something to the consumers that didn't exist before, which was really quality affordable clothes for young girls."
  Image: http://mtblog.glamour.com/fashion/blogs/slaves-to-fashion/2009/10/22/1022future-of-fashion-panel_fa.jpg
Cindi asked the panel to "fill in the blank" and sum up the evening by finishing this sentence: "In the future, fashion will be more ____ ." "More democratic," Robin, who just moved to Washington, D.C. to become a one-woman Mrs. O reporting machine, said. "Less obnoxious, more fetishistic," Isaac answered. And Ashley, who is already a style mogul at just 23 years of age, said the best was yet to come: "More exciting!" was her answer.
After getting a serious education over the course of the hour-long discussion (Ashley Olsen's numero uno reason for her wardrobe decisions: "I just wear what's comfortable.") I asked Cindi what surprised her most about what she heard from our panelists. "That Isaac wishes celebs would disappear from magazine covers, that Ashley loves the low-heeled shoe trend, and that Robin believes that fashion advertising is actually more racially diverse than the runway is."
So rest assured, my dear Slaves to Fashion--things may seem bleak for the future of fashion, but there's also a heck of a lot to look forward to. "For a long time, the fashion industry was coasting on trendy handbags and trendy shoes and tons of sales," Robin said. And with the economy forcing designers to re-examine women's priorities, we're getting more innovation, less luxury excess. "It's a total rebirth!" Isaac declared. We couldn't agree more.

He was one of the first designers to plunge into the cheap-chic thing with his line for Target way back in 2001, and he'll be heading to QVC this winter to sell everything from handbags to cheesecakes.
