My local news is saying he "may" be in custody, and that he's being charged with second degree murder.

George Zimmerman Faces Second Degree Murder Charges, Official Says

Florida special prosecutor Angela Corey will announce Wednesday that she is charging George Zimmerman in the shooting death of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin, according to multiple reports.

Corey will hold a press conference on the case at 6:00pm ET in Jacksonville, Fla., to announce that Zimmerman is in custody and will face second-degree murder charges, an official told the Associated Press. (You can watch the presser live on Fox News Latino)

The Washington Post first reported that Corey would bring charges.

Corey announced earlier this week that she was not convening a grand jury in the case, meaning the decision on whether to charge Zimmerman was hers alone.

Without a grand jury indictment, Corey could not pursue a first-degree murder charge. She could have gone forward with second-degree murder or manslaughter charges.

The unarmed Martin, an African-American, was shot and killed in a gated community in Sanford, Fla., by neighborhood watchman Zimmerman, who claims he was acting in self-defense.

Zimmerman's lack of arrest in the case has sparked nationwide protests by civil rights activists who claim race has been a factor in the investigation.

The decision to charge Zimmerman comes a day after his lawyers said they could no longer represent him because their client had not returned their calls in days.

The lawyers, Hal Uhrig and Craig Sonner, also said their former client had fled the state of Florida.

Martin's family has raised concerns that Zimmerman could be a flight risk, but Sonner told NBC's "Today" show Wednesday that he believed Zimmerman would turn himself in if charged.

"I don't believe he's a flight risk," Sonner said. "I can't disclose where he is ... but he's in contact (with authorities). If it becomes necessary to turn himself in, I believe he will do it. I don't believe he's going to flee the country."

Martin's parents were speaking at a press conference with the Rev. Al Sharpton when The Post reported Zimmerman would be charged.

"We cannot confirm those reports," Sharpton said.

Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi and Gov. Rick Scott selected Corey to replace Norm Wolfinger as the lead prosecutor in the case on March 22, the same day Sanford Police Chief Bill Lee temporarily stepped down amid sharp criticism of his department's handling of the case.

Lawyers for Martin's family have accused Wolfinger of disregarding a police recommendation that Zimmerman be charged with manslaughter. Wolfinger has vociferously denied the allegations.

I wonder how much physical evidence there was and whether it's possible to piece together the sequence of events?

I wonder if Zimmerman will plead to something lesser?

If it goes to a jury, I wonder if they will convict? I hope they didn't charge Zimmerman to appease the public, with the expectation that he would be acquitted.

His new lawyer says that Zimmerman will plead "not guilty".

I thought the special prosecutor did a FANTASTIC job presenting the charges. Really top notch without compromising the case, making false proises or, even, throwing anyone under the proverbial bus. I'm guessing he's in protective custody somewhere far from the home turf.

It's Florida. ANYTHINGS POSSIBLE, as we've been shown again and again.

On another site, I asked a question regarding this incident; if Zimmerman and Martin were in a bare knuckle fight, no weapons at all present, what then? Can' stand your ground' still be applied ? Could Martin have applied this law too had he lived? I mean, Martin may have felt hisself was in danger when Zimmerman approached him.
Would Zimmerman even approach Martin if he didn't have the gun?

I was ignored and my question left unanswered.

This case breaks my heart but Trayvon's parents bring me to tears. I am so impressed with the way they have handled this. The world could learn a lot from these people. I hope I am never in their position, but if I am, I pray I can be like them.

I agree, they have shown a lot of strength and dignity in this tragic ordeal. I hope they get the justice they deserve.

Zimmerman's attorneys want a change of venue for the trial. I bet they're going to try for the Panhandle or Jacksonville. I couldn't see this trial taking place in say, Miami and Tampa is too close by.

I don't understand this at all either, in theory then wouldnt Martin have been standing ground by confronting him if he did?
