I got spanked as a kid (rarely... maybe less than a half a dozen times and only for significant misbehaviour) and I survived fine. It's only a problem when the parents hit too hard (I don't think hitting with rulers or wooden spoons is a good idea...) or too often, for dumb things like failing a spelling test or having a messy bedroom or something.

Also, I remember once mum literally washed my mouth out with soap after I used foul language. Now that was a threat I never expected her to actually follow through on!

But anyway. A kid this antisocial is well beyond the control of normal discipline... spanking or not-spanking doesn't influence kids into becoming murderers. It's totally aberrant behaviour.

We'll just have to agree to disagree when it comes to hitting kids. My parents hit me growing up, and looking back on it I'm glad they did. Because a 'time out' wouldn't have worked with me, or any of the other kids I knew growing up.

Lots of kids got spanked growing up and turned out just fine.

I got hit maybe once my whole life, but the threat was always there.

And I'm glad they did. I was a quiet child anyway. But my parents never hit my sister because I think they're just too old to bother by now, an d she's out of control. Her temper tantrums are crazy.

Absolutely agree to disagree. I think most people survive the odd spanking but where do you draw the line? And when do you start saying it's not ok to hit when you're doing the hitting? Hit another adult and you'll be charged with assault, hit a kid you're home free, hit a woman-if you're a man-you'll be charged with domestic assualt. Who is the most defenseless of those three?

Also, hitting has been outlawed in Sweden since the early '70's and I think it's safe to say that it's a pretty well-behaved population with very low crime.

I was spanked as a child, but not often. I knew the rules though. You got a warning about your behaviour, and if you carried on you got another warning and the threat of being spanked. Carry on some more and you got it. The threat was enough usually to stop us, and I don't recall many times that my mum had to resort to carrying it out.

But to each their own, I guess.

I realize that this is probably sarcasm, but it actually is very accurate. Kids today don't have anymore access to guns than they did in the pioneer days where every household was armed and kids as young as 14 or so fought in the Revolutionary War. So, if it's the guns that are the primary problem, where were all these child murderers then?

The kid went to school after killing this woman too. See, he IS disciplined. Killed his fathers girlfriend, then gets promptly on the bus on time.

Except the difference in all of those examples that you just gave is that if the average parent spanks their kid they are disciplining them, which is what they're suppose to do. And spanking a child is disciplining them, even if you don't agree with corporal punishment. As long as it doesn't cross the line into physical abuse. So, it's not really a valid example to place spanking a child in the same category as one adult hitting another one or domestic violence.

Although I've never spanked any of the kids I ever had to watch. I've threatened to do it, which has done the trick when I need them to behave and stop getting on my nerves.

^^add me to the "I got spanked and it did a world of good for my behavior" camp.....and, when the school called to tell my parents I was out of line....they approved the principal to spank me, too.....

....I'm one of the least violent people I know.....

I got spanked too. Not a lot, because I didn't want a lot of spankings so once I figured out what would get my ass busted, I stopped doing it. Jesus, kids aren't stupid, delicate little angels who are going to crack open if you raise your voice to the tiny little darlings FFS!
