I just read a headline on my yahoo home page how this prick is now retracting his confession & saying "I'll explain it all later"

God, this guy needs to be shanked in the worst way.

I read that he says he was pressured into confessing, and given false promises of extradition to The Netherlands.

Which is strange because we do not want him. If anything, he'd be extradited to Aruba. He didn't commit any crimes in The Netherlands so there's no reason for us to bring him here.

I think he's just giving all these different stories to get us confused... if we don't know what's true and what's not, how can he be convicted? There's still the evidence but how waterproof is that?

He's not the smartest person in the world but he's definitely shrewd.

He can easily be convicted, surely? There's video footage of him and only him entering and leaving the room where the girl was murdered. He apparently covered her body with his bloody shirt, which he smothered her with after breaking her neck.

Oh he'll find a way to discredit the evidence, I'm sure. He'll try anyway.

eta: He's grasping at straw here, he's got nothing to lose.

Joran van der Sloot's Mother: '[My Son] Is Sick in His Head'

    By Tiffany McGee
    Monday June 21, 2010 01:15 PM EDT

Anita van der Sloot, the mother of accused killer Joran van der Sloot, has broken her silence, granting her first interview in years to the Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf.

"He is not a monster," Anita tells the paper. "He's sick in the head but wanted no help."

In the interview, Anita also reveals that Joran was to be committed to a physchiatric hospital just two days before he fled for Peru, where he is accused of killing 21-year-old Stephany Flores. Anita says Joran, who has now retracted his initial confession to being involved in Flores's death, had "nothing to do with the disappearance of Natalee Holloway in 2005." But, she adds, "Stephany, he may have killed."

Anita says she and her husband, who passed away of a heart attack in February, made a mistake by allowing a "traumatized" Joran the opportunity to study in the Netherlands following the Holloway case. "He already needed physchiatric help back then," she says. Since then, her son's life spiraled downward quickly.

Anita says Joran told many lies, struggled with an addiction to poker and experienced severe physchological stress following his father's death from a heart attack, for which he blamed himself. Though she stood by his side during his two arrests tied to Holloway's disappearance, she concludes: "I will not visit him in his cell ... I cannot embrace him ... I believed Joran, despite his many lies."

I don't understand why his mother can say he may have murdered Stephany but had nothing to do with Natalie?????

I watched the video on a Dateline special last night and it is very eerie.. especially b/c he acted and looked so normal. It's unreal what people can hide.

Probably because that would implicate her too, seeing as her husband is meant to have helped cover up that murder and I'd guess she knew all about it. I'm pleasantly surprised by what she has said now though, I thought she'd stand by him.

^oh that's a good point! It didn't make sense to me but I bet you're right. I was surprised too by what she is saying now. I would love to hear stories from his childhood and why she thinks he's sick in the head (besides the murder.. the article sounds like she knew before or has always known).

The mother is all part of the plan to get him off due to mental distress/insanity. If she goes on record that he was mentally ill and expected to enter a mental health facility, it will just give more support for his insanity claim down the road. She will likely also contact a mental health place that will fix the books to reflect that he really was supposed to check-in. I call bullshit on her whole story.

^ Joran did see a psychiatrist when he was young though, so it's true that his parents have known he's always had 'issues'.

what's better than sending your child with 'issues' off to globe trot, especially after being accused of killing someone? idiots.

I would bet that he's had several victims, a lot of serial killers start off with "easy" prey like hookers, the extremely poor etc. IMO He had to have gained confidence to pull off a murder like Natalee's off.

The most disturbing thing to me (from watching the dateline special last night) was that Beth and her Attorney (and the FBI) set Joran up in a sting and they told him they would pay him for information -they paid him $10,000 and would wire him $15,000 (if he accepted the wire, they'd get him for wire fraud). So they were saying, on that program, that Beth basically funded his travels and if he wouldn't have had that money, he wouldn't have been able to go to that place, casino, hotel to murder Stephany. In a way, it makes sense b/c he was broke... very sad.

Given he turned out to be a homocidal sociopath, I would say so!
