Wow, personal attack much? Tsk, tsk.

They did. Many of those who came out safely said they thought it was special "live" effects for the occasion of the premiere. It wasn't until people started gagging from the smoke that they realized the popping sounds were real!

Aurora Shooting: Alex Sullivan Confirmed Dead on His 27th Birthday - ABC News

On a day that should have been marked for celebration, Alex Sullivan’s friends and family hadn’t been able to reach him.

The married bartender celebrated his 27th birthday by attending the midnight screening of “The Dark Knight Rises” in Aurora, Colo., with his co-workers.

“Oh man one hour till the movie and its going to be the best BIRTHDAY ever,” he tweeted.

A family friend has now confirmed that Alex Sullivan is among the people who died in the theater shortly after midnight, allegedly at the hands of suspect James Holmes.

Sullivan’s phone was off, and his car was still parked in the lot at the Century 16 theater in Aurora. He was not one of the injured being treated at local hospitals.

“There is a reason why he has not responded,” Bryan Beard, who has been friends with Sullivan since their freshman year in high school, said earlier in the day.

Beard had been camped out at Gateway High School, where witnesses were taken after the attack, waiting for information about Sullivan.

He was joined by his friend’s father, Tom Sullivan, who carried a photo of his son, hoping someone would recognize him.

Shelly Fradkin, who is Beard’s mother, said Aurora Police were supportive in communicating what they could to friends and family members.

“They have really gone above and beyond,” she said earlier in the day. “We have turned over every stone we possibly could today.”
Jesus, that poor guy, that poor family.

I'm sorry honey, but I'm about to put a name with another face (note again, I refuse to utter the shooter's name; I suspects he wants notoriety and I'd rather people remember the victims' names.)

Micayla Medek, 23, was among the 12 people killed during a shooting rampage inside an Aurora, Colo., movie theater, a family member said. (July 20, 2012)

    By Robin Abcarian
    July 20, 2012, 10:18 p.m.
The family of 23-year-old Micayla Medek went through an almost unimaginable emotional torture Friday.

They knew she’d been wounded in the Aurora, Colo., movie theater shooting shortly after midnight Thursday; her friends who’d accompanied her to “The Dark Knight Rises” told them as much. But it took nearly 20 hours after the gunman killed 12 people and wounded 58 others to get the awful news.

Late Friday, they learned that Cayla, as they called her, was one of 10 people who died in the movie theater. Her body remained on the scene as investigators completed their work. Anita Busch, a cousin of Medek’s father and a former Los Angeles Times reporter, confirmed that authorities told family members Medek died from injuries suffered in the attack.

Cayla’s father, Greg Medek, and her older sister, Amanda, had spent most of the day frantically rushing to the six local hospitals that had treated the wounded, hoping for any information. They showed her picture to law enforcement authorities and pleaded for help. They also went to the local high school, where families had been told to rendezvous with loved ones who survived the attack. They learned nothing.

Hours before the family learned of Cayla’s fate, an aunt said the family was in emotional turmoil.

“My brother is very religious and this is really challenging his belief,” said Greg Medek’s sister, Jenny Zakovich of South Milwaukee, Wis. “His 81-year-old mother is here. She is hysterical. We don’t know what to do -- we feel so helpless.”

On her Facebook page, Micayla identified herself as a Subway sandwich artist. A graduate of William C. Hinkley High School in Aurora, she said she was a member of the class of 2015 of the Community College of Aurora.

“I’m a simple independent girl who’s just trying to get her life together while still having fun,” she wrote.

Micayla's friends told family members they tried to carry her out of the theater after she was wounded but were instructed by emergency personnel to leave her inside, Zakovich said.

"She was coughing and she fell to the ground, and that's when the police or whoever was trying to help her ushered them out and said 'There is nothing you can do,'" Zakovich said. "That makes me think she was critical and they couldn't move her."

Medek’s father, Greg, called his sister Friday morning.

"He was absolutely hysterical, just sobbing, 'I want to get my baby and bring her home,'" Zakovich said. "He feels she is lying on the floor of the theater and it is making him insane.”

"I just want to hear she's not one of the ones laying in the theater," said her aunt, hours before her death was confirmed. "I keep looking at her Facebook page, hoping she will say, 'I am OK.' But there's nothing."

I think this is a cute pic of Cayla; appears to have been such a fun girl:

There's a pic of her sister Amanda crying, but I have reservations about posting it.

^1. Yes, personal stories like that bring home the message even more. So sad to read about the grandmother and the rest of the family.
    2. About the police telling them to leave her while she was still alive? I get it, but I don't get it. I hope they did try to get medical personnel in quickly after that first assessment: it wasn't a recovery yet, but a rescue if somebody is still alive, no matter how critical.
    3. Isn't it amazing how most of these right wing bible belt people are so ready to condemn, yet the majority of them will never give up their guns. Idiots.

thanks for the update, Kat. It's going to be a whole lot sadder when all the names and pictures are released. I hope all involved are able to find some peace.

Jessica Ghawi's (Redfield) brother Jordan is both tweeting and maintaining a blog about this. To dispel any false reports Jordan has posted a clear statement:

This is what I have been told by Brent, who was with my sister at the time of the shooting. This will be the only statement that I will make on the events surrounding what appears to be her death.
Jessica and Brent were seated in the middle portion of the theatre when a device was thrown into the theatre that produced a “hissing” sound. The theatre than began to fill with smoke which is when patrons began to move from their seats. At that time, shots were fired. Brent and Jessica immediately dropped to a prone position for cover. Jessica advised multiple times for someone to call 911, which Brent immediately attempted to do. Brent then heard Jessica scream and noticed that she was struck by a round in the leg. Brent, began holding pressure on the wound and attempted to calm Jessica. It was at this time that Brent took a round to his lower extremities. While still administering first aid, Brent noticed that Jessica was no longer screaming. He advised that he looked over to Jessica and saw what appeared to be an entry wound to her head. He further stated that Jessica presented with agonal respirations. Brent then took what may have been his only chance to escape the line of fire and exited the structure where he then contacted my mother. Brent’s actions are nothing but heroic. The veracity of any other statements not issued by myself or Peter Burns should be questioned.

Besides being so, so, sooooo tragic, this whole thing is so very suspicious. Too many members of a certain group of people seem a little bit too ok with it, if you know what I mean. (Not people on here, on other blogs.) If you guys have some time to kill, scan some other websites reporting on this and research the comments regarding the events/shooter/etc.- see what you pull up. This was no random mentally disturbed young man IMO, and I believe you all might end up feeling that way too and if that just so happens to be the case as American's we need to find who ever these people are, the ones with the extremist, evil agenda and proactively and without fear weed them out. I don't get the comments about the "emergency doors" and them not having alarms or people able to just walk out. I've been to theaters in different states and they have all been the same. I live in California and that's how the doors have been since I can remember, I guess they are technically emergency doors, but they are used as normal exit doors when the movie is over. People can walk all the way to the front door the way they came in or they can go out the back door (emergency door) which usually lead directly to a parking lot or a hallway that leads out to the parking lot. It's usually a shortcut and less crowded. There are no alarms, they are used as normal exits. Usually people are not standing in that back hallway and it would be very easy to prop it open and go grab your shit from your car or a bag hidden close by, say next to someone's car. When I was a kid we would go open it for other kids waiting outside to sneak them in the movie. No attendants stand back there, they would block it (which would be unsafe as it should be clear) or have to stand by the hallway for the whole movie.

I am sure the movie theater will get sued beyond belief, but it's ridiculous. Now I can see movie theaters only making them emergency exits with alarms because they would be worried about getting sued. I could see there being a silent alarm that notifies someone that the door has been propped open as they always self close and are typically heavy exterior/fire doors.

Just FYI, there's a screencap purported to prove this bastard is a 9gag user, but please understand that there's a trolling war going on between 9gag and 4chan that's so bad it includes trolling a 15yr old's memorial page and posting child pornography. There's every reason to suspect the screencap is more trolling. (p.s. I'm only going to link that crap because it's so unbelievably exploitative of the shooting. Just wanted to mention it to discourage misinformation.)

Rumour has it the shooter had recently flunked his prelims at University of Colorado; I say rumour because it's 'reddit' and a very, very poor quality screencap of a facebook convo.

    source: reddit

From webslueths I'm getting that he was withdrawing from a neuroscience doctoral. Stuff about flunking (i.e. the possible "stresser") is supposed to be private/privileged so the university wont comment on that.

I don't know if this is relevant, by on the 22nd it will be the first anniversary of the Oslo massacre. Don't sick fucks like these fantasize about copying and trying to outdo each other?

Out of respect for the victims and their families is this sensationalist posting of social media crap particularly helpful?

I wonder what made his mum so sure that her son had committed this atrocity as soon as she heard about it?

A long article. If you're the tl;dr type, it's all about the shooter being a "nice, quiet" "studious" anti-social type. His mother is shacked up in her home but his father took a plane to Colorado. Also, a neighbour who responded to the blaring music realised his door was unlocked, but thankfully she didn't enter the rigged apartment.

Aurora shooting suspect left apartment "booby trapped," music blaring
    POSTED: 07/20/2012 06:48:59 AM MDT
UPDATED: 07/20/2012 09:54:54 PM MDTBy Sara Burnett and Jessica Fender
    The Denver Post

AURORA —The 24-year-old accused of shooting some 70 people early Friday morning was a former honor student and recent graduate school dropout who apparently booby trapped his apartment and left the stereo blaring non-stop techno music before he headed to the local movie theater where police say he killed 12 people.

James Eagan Holmes of 1690 Paris Street surrendered to police in the parking lot outside the theater "without any significant incident," Aurora police Chief Dan Oates said. Oates said Holmes made a statement to officers about possible explosives in his home. That prompted police to evacuate five buildings nearby and begin searching his third-floor apartment using a police robot and camera attached to a long pole. Inside, officers found trip wires attached to 1-liter plastic bottles that contain an unknown substance.
Police Chief Dan Oates said the explosive devices were "pretty sophisticated." "We could be here for days," he said at midday.
Holmes grew up in San Diego and graduated from Westview High School there in 2006. In 2010, he earned a degree in neuroscience from the University of California Riverside, a spokeswoman for the university said. Chancellor Timothy White said Holmes distinguished himself academically, graduating with highest honors, but that he did not walk at his commencement ceremony. "Academically, he was the top of the top," White said.

The Mai family has lived next door to the Holmes family for abut 15 years on a middle-class street in suburban San Diego. Christine Mai, 17, said she never saw James Holmes act violent or inappropriately. She never knew him or his family to have weapons or any conflicts. He grew up with a younger sister who plays guitar and attends San Diego State University. Christine Mai said Holmes' father went to Colorado to be with his son and his mother was holed up inside her home and didn't want to have any visitors. Dozens of reporters were camped outside the house.

The Holmes had Christmas parties in their front yard and often exchanged gifts with the Mai family, she said. Last year, they shared hot apple cider in the front yard with other neighbors. "He seemed like a nice guy," she said. "His mother used to tell us he was a good son."
Holmes left home to attend UCR, but returned home after graduation and had a hard time finding work. He took a part-time job at a nearby McDonald's to pay for school, she said. "He didn't have a job,"she said. "I felt bad for him because he studied so hard. My brother said he looked kind of down, he seemed depressed."

Christine Mai and her father, Tom said they never saw Holmes socializing with friends, partying at his house or with any girlfriends. "James was nice and quiet," Tom Mai said. "He was studious, he cut the grass, and cleaned the car. He was very bright."
Julie Adams said her son played soccer with Holmes at Westview High. Holmes played his freshman and sophomore year, she said.
While most of the other kids — her son Taylor included — played league soccer and continues the sport throughout high school, Holmes wasn't as involved, she said. "I could tell you a lot about every single kid on that team except for him," Adams said. "He was more aloof." She was shocked to discover this morning that the helicopters were circling her San Diego neighborhood because Holmes' alleged rampage. "Taylor remembers playing soccer with him. He said he was quiet, reserved and a respectful kid," Adams said. According to her son's yearbook, Holmes also ran cross country as a freshman but did not continue the sport.

Holmes enrolled in the graduate program in neurosciences at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus in Aurora in June 2011 but was in the process of withdrawing, university spokeswoman Jacque Montgomery said Friday. In an e-mail message to members of the campus community, Doug Abraham, Chief of Police for the university, said Holmes left the school in June and his access to campus buildings was terminated while his withdrawal was being processed. He said officials do not believe
Holmes had been on campus since then, but authorities evacuated non-essential personnel from the research buildings as a precautionary measure while they wait for bomb-sniffing dogs to do a search of the buildings "to add another level of assurance."

In an apartment rental application he submitted for a different apartment early last year, Holmes described himself as a "quiet and easy-going" student. Other tenants in his building — which is reserved for students, faculty and staff of the medical campus — described him as a recluse. A pharmacy student who also lives in the building told The Post he called 911 around 12:30 a.m. because there was a song blaring from the stereo inside apartment 10, where Holmes lived. The student, who wanted to be identified only as Ben, said he couldn't make out the song but that it seemed to be playing on repeat. Kaitlyn Fonzi, a 20-year-old biology student at University of Colorado Denver, lives in an apartment below Holmes. Around midnight, Fonzi said she heard techno music blasting from Holmes apartment. She went upstairs and knocked on the door. When no one answered, she put her hand on the door knob and realized the door was unlocked.
Fonzi decided not to go inside the apartment. The music turned off at almost exactly 1 a.m., Fonzi said.

Police received several reports of the shooting at the Century 16 Movie Theaters at the Aurora Town Center around 12:39 a.m. Witnesses told police that a man entered the dark, packed theater and opened fire after throwing two smoke canisters. Oates said he was dressed in black and wearing a ballistic helmet and vest, ballistic leggings, throat and groin protector and gas mask and black tactical gloves. He was armed with three weapons. NBC News said law enforcement officials told them the weapons were bought from local stores of two national chains — Gander Mountain Guns and Bass Pro Shop — beginning in May. His neighbors in Aurora said he kept to himself and wouldn't acknowledge people when they passed in the hall and said hello. "No one knew him. No one," one man said. Fonzi said Holmes seemed normal and studious. The maintenance person at Holmes' last apartment in Riverside remembered Holmes much the same way.
Jose Torres,45, said he didn't remember Holmes having a roommate and said he wasn't social. Torres gasped when he realized Holmes was the accused shooter in Colorado. "He did not talk too much," Torres said after looking at a photograph of Holmes. "He don't say hi. He was just quiet with no problems."When told of the booby traps authorities found in Holmes' apartment in Aurora, Torres appeared shocked.
"He didn't destroy this apartment when he left," Torres said. "When he left it was in good condition."

Authorities began searching Holmes' Aurora apartment building around 2 a.m. A resident of the building who didn't want to give his name said he answered his door to see police with rifles. An officer asked if he had seen a white guy with crazy hair, possibly dyed unnatural colors, the man said. It was unclear if the officer was referring to Holmes. Wes Bradshaw and his mother Lavonne watched the search of the third-floor apartment from their apartment, they said. The two watched a police robot enter the building right before they heard a small explosion. The two, along with the rest of the building's tenants, were ordered to evacuate soon after, they said. Residents of the area were huddled on street corners waiting for news. Police at the scene told them it could be hours before they are allowed to return to their homes. About 6:30 a.m., three police officers on a fire truck bucket were looking through the window of the third-floor apartment and taking pictures. Using a long pole, responders broke into the window from the basket atop a ladder truck. Aurora Deputy Fire Chief Chris Henderson said authorities could see several "string-like contraptions" inside. "We're not sure exactly where they connect to," Henderson said.

Jim Yacone, special agent in charge of the Denver FBI, said they were working on "how to disarm the flammable or explosive material." Neighbors in a fourth-floor apartment one building had a bird's eye view of the suspect's apartment. They said the curtains are usually closed and they never see any movement inside the apartment. Even at night, there are no lights or anything in that apartment, said Yesenia Lujan, 24, who has lived in her apartment for seven months. Using a camera with a zoom lens, Lujan's roommate said he could see into the suspect's kitchen, where a poster of Will Farrell in the movie "Anchorman" was hanging on the wall.
Holmes is scheduled to appear in court in Arapahoe County on Monday morning.

Staff writers Jordan Steffen, Kieran Nicholson and Monte Whaley and freelance writer Felisa Cardona contributed.

I was at the newsagents earlier and the trashy tabloid rags (the sun, daily record etc) have all called the gunman the "batman killer". I find it sickening, that kind of nonsense will only feed into his sense of grandeur, is it really necessary to give him a tag? Oh that's right, its completely necessary to sell papers so its ok to glorify him. Disgusting.
