I guess they think that because the victim's family is rich there has to be something more to this, apparently the nanny murdering the children isn't quite sensational enough.

NYC nanny pleads not guilty in child deaths

Yoselyn Ortega is accused of fatally stabbing 6-year-old Lucia Krim and her 2-year-old brother Leo in their Manhattan apartment.

NEW YORK — A nanny accused in the stabbing deaths of two children at their upscale Manhattan home pleaded not guilty Wednesday at a hospital where she's being treated for self-inflicted stab wounds.

Yoselyn Ortega, who was handcuffed to her hospital bed and wearing a blue hair net, entered the plea through her attorney. She appeared alert but didn't speak during the 10-minute hearing.

A judge ordered Ortega held without bail while she undergoes psychiatric exam. A court date was set for Jan. 16.

Police say that on the evening of Oct. 25, while the children's mother was out with a third child, Ortega repeatedly stabbed 6-year-old Lucia Krim and her 2-year-old brother, Leo.

When their mother, Marina Krim, returned with her 3-year-old daughter, she found their bodies in the bathtub, with Ortega lying on the bathroom floor with stab wounds to her neck. A kitchen knife was nearby.

The children's father, CNBC digital media executive Kevin Krim, had been away on a business trip when the killings occurred.

The couple's apartment building sits in one of the city's most idyllic neighborhoods, a block from Central Park, near the Museum of Natural History and blocks from Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts. The neighborhood is home to many affluent families, and seeing children accompanied by nannies is an everyday part of life there.

Some of Ortega's friends and relatives said she appeared to be struggling emotionally and financially recently, but they still couldn't believe she could have committed such a heinous act.

Meh. It's just a matter of holding the State to its burden to prove all of the elements of the offense, including intent. They may introduce evidence of mental illness to cloud the intent element, even if insanity itself won't fly. Nothing unusual about that.

I wonder how these poor parents are doing? I can't imagine what their world must be like. I feel so sad for them when I read about this. I imagine they must replay things over and over in their heads, wondering if they missed signs or thinking they should have fired her after the argument. I would have to be heavily medicated if I were the mom.

Nanny Yoselyn Ortega Found Fit to Stand Trial

The woman who killed two young children in her care will go to trial. Justice Gregory Carro heard psychiatric testimony for eight days before ruling that 50-year-old nanny Yoselyn Ortega was mentally fit, and that her confusion seemed only to set in "when she's questioned in a formal setting by doctors evaluating her fitness."

Ortega murdered six-year-old Lulu Krim and her brother two-year-old Leo Krim in their Upper West Side home while their parents were out. A third child, their sister, was out with her parents.

Ortega and her defense attorney's gambit was to make the judge think that Ortega had no memory of the event, and any of her testimony about it was the result of "parakeet[ing]" what had been said in her presence. The mental unfitness, the defense said, was from blood loss incurred when Ortega slit her own throat at the scene of the crime.

But records of her jailhouse phone calls showed Ortega to be quite the talker when her family was on the line. And the prosecution was able to hobble the defense's case by offering competing expert testimony.

Ortega will now face down first-degree murder charges.

Ortega's facing first degree murder, huh? GOOD. I never bought the crazy story with this one.

Those poor parents, I hope their surviving child and the new baby to come are helping them survive and heal.

Parents of Kids Slain in Tub Welcome New Baby - They welcome new son, Felix
(Newser) – The parents of two children allegedly stabbed to death by their own nanny last year have welcomed new joy into their lives. On Facebook, Marina and Kevin Krim wrote, "We are very excited to share with you that Felix Harrison Krim, all 8 pounds, 10 ounces, and 21.5 inches of him, arrived today." The Krims have a fund set up in honor of their lost children—the Lulu and Leo Fund. They say their surviving child, Nessie, was very excited to welcome her new baby brother. Newsy reports:

I hope this baby brings some much needed joy to their lives. I can't begin to imagine the pain and I certainly don't want to.

As a parent, I just don't know how I could go on after something like that happened. Obviously, I would have to for the sake of the surviving child. And even though I think I would feel like almost the only thing left of me would be a shell, Nessie doesn't deserve that. She would need more help/love/attention than ever. It's amazing how people endure and go on after tragedies.

I agree Mo. I hate to even think about it, but when things like this happen, you have to think about it. I would forever be torturing myself with "what ifs," but yeah you have to "go on" for your surviving child.
