I have believed from day one that they did it themselves. Probably she wouldn't quit fussing and somebody hit her. The mother acted weird from day one, out jogging etc. Their stories about when they checked on the kids didn't confirm with the restaurant workers who told a different story. Blood in the car and "corpse" smell on the car keys?

Maybe the police are suggesting accidently death to get a confession as to what really happen.

As for the rental car - perhaps she wasn't dead at all, perhaps it's something more morbid - maybe one of the people that were looking in on their children did something to the child or they planned a fake kidnapping with one of their swinger friends and something bad happened later while she was being kept hidden of which would explain the blood in the rental car.

Ok, I like to think that from watching CSI, I have first hand knowledge of DNA...not!
So, would they be able to tell from the blood they found that it was without a doubt the kids? Would it be possible to be from one of the parents? I know we share DNA with family members...just thinking out loud.
It would take a sick enough individual to kill their own child, but to take her body from point A to point B 25 days later?

Tiny traces of blood were also found recently in the apartment by trained sniffer dogs (which should have been brought in to begin with by the Portuguese police but the way they have handled this is another story). That blood has also been analysed in the UK by an independent forensic lab and we don't know the results yet but whatever they are is directly linked to the parents being re-interviewed.

We only have the parents word that they actually looked in to the kids' room to check they were OK. The friend who went to the apartment only listened at the door.

Can can positively indentify if the blood is Maddy's via DNA and also if there are any traces of drugs - hence my theory that she was sedated, accidentally died, and the parents had to cover up their abuse/neglect with this abduction story. They then had a body to dispose of so once the initial police activity had calmed down a bit, 25 days later, they moved the body and disposed of it somewhere. Where they kept it between the night she died and the time they took her away is a mystery but not impossible. They are both very intelligent people and may even have had an accomplice willing to keep the body for them.

I'm sure they didn't deliberately kill their daughter, but instead of just telling the truth and facing the consequences they've used this elaborate charade which is going to make things 100 times worse for them when the truth finally emerges, which it will.

The police are interviewing the parents separately because it's the best way to 'crack' a story that two people have cooked up between themselves. The old Divide And Conquer theory.

The timeline suggests that the daughter was already dead when the parents left for dinner and they kept up the charade that she was alive by "checking on her". Because otherwise...if a parent left for say, 10 minutes during dinner to walk down to the apartment, check in, and walk back, that's not enough time to dispose of the body.

Also, if the friend went to check and just listened at the door, how could they guarantee that the friend wouldn't have opened the door and seen that Maddie wasn't in there? That was a huge risk if she was already dead.

And I must say that if Maddie were already dead when they went to dinner, they must be some cold-hearted SOB's to be able to laugh and drink with friends knowing that their daughter was dead.

    It doesn't add up, really.

The only other possibility is that Maddie died in that room while they were at dinner, and it doesn't sound like they would've had enough time to hide a body between when they "discovered" her missing and called the police.

    Thoughts? This is really perplexing.

We don't know the exact time they 'discovered' she was missing. Only the time they called the cops. It would take only a few minutes to hide a small child's body somewhere nearby - then they have two options. If the cops find the body then someone must have drugged/assaulted/murdered Maddy and if they don't find the body (as was the case) they stick with the abduction and dispose of the body later.

I must be the only one here, but as cynical as I always am, I do not believe that they were involved in their child's death. No legitimate evidence has been offered otherwise. Blood evidence in a car (rented 25 days after the child's disappearance!) is not much to go on. And the fact that the blood is found only now means it could have been easily contaminated. I think the Portugal police are putting the pressure on her because they have botched this whole case so badly from the start. I'm sure they ruined that whole crime scene and contaminated any evidence because they didn't even treat the hotel room as a crime scene from the start, they always were convinced it was an abduction and not a murder. They never put in the effort in the first 24 hours. They will never get a conviction unless they force a confession, which I believe she was smart to get a lawyer, because I have no doubt without one she would have been coerced into submitting a fake confession. In any case, I don't have much sympathy for them because they were obviously negligent. But thats far from being murderers, or covering up a crime. Until I hear more evidence, I'm reserving judgment. I can only imagine how devastating it would be to be falsely accused of killing your own daughter.

I find this rush to judgment on the parents on the basis of some overlooked blood very disconcerting. I'm sure if the forensics team went through my house, they'd find all kinds of blood. Most of us cut ourselves from time to time and forget about it. Children often have accidents leading to blood being shed.

The mother murders the child for what reason? I haven't heard a satisfactory explanation of that one yet. I realize that sometimes there are no rational explanations, but until I hear a LOT more evidence against her and/or her husband, I will presume they are innocent until proven guilty.

She was pretty much greeted by a lynch mob at the police station -- I saw this on TV and it was disgusting.

    Edited to say ITA January.

Gerry McCann's sister, Philomena, told Britain's ITV television today that Kate McCann had been offered a reduced sentence by police if she confessed.
I don't think they deliberately murdered their child. I think she died accidentally and they tried to cover it up. Huge difference.

Edit: BBC World (OK it's the worse news service of them all but never mind) says the police believe that Kate McCann "is responsible" for Maddy's death and Gerry is an accessory.

Gerry McCann has been declared an arguido, or formal suspect, by Portuguese police investigating the disappearance of his daughter Madeleine, his lawyer said.

Mr McCann walked out of the regional police headquarters just after midnight after nearly eight hours of questioning.
Mrs McCann has been warned by her lawyer that she could be charged over her daughter's death
On Friday his wife Kate, also an arguido, was asked directly by detectives whether she had accidentally killed Madeleine.
Mrs McCann has been warned by her lawyer that she could be charged over her daughter's death.

Police offered her a reduced sentence if she admitted killing her daughter accidentally, hiding her body and disposing of it, according to Mr McCann's sister, Philomena McCann.
But Mrs McCann refused, saying: "How dare you, how dare you use emotional blackmail to get me to confess to something I didn't do."
During her questioning, detectives suggested that traces of Madeleine's DNA were found in the family's hire car, a silver Renault Scenic that they are still using.
Mrs McCann is understood to have told them angrily there was "no way" that could be possible because the couple did not lease the vehicle until 25 days after their daughter disappeared.

Portuguese detectives appear to be working on the theory that Mrs McCann killed her daughter by accident and covered up the death by claiming she was abducted.
Test results from the Forensic Science Service in Birmingham received in recent days have apparently boosted this hypothesis.
Mr McCann's alleged role is not clear, but sources said police believe he was an accessory to the killing.
Family and friends of the McCanns dismissed any suggestion Mrs McCann could have been involved in Madeleine's disappearance on May 3 as "ridiculous".
It is now 127 days since four-year-old Madeleine went missing from her family's holiday apartment in Praia da Luz while her parents dined with friends nearby.
Until now there had only been one arguido in the case, Anglo-Portuguese expatriate Robert Murat.
He is widely expected to be formally ruled out of the inquiry shortly.
Under Portuguese law, an arguido has legal protection that is not extended to a witness, including the right to remain silent during questioning and the right to legal representation.
It is not uncommon for people caught up in criminal investigations in Portugal to declare themselves arguidos in order to receive this protection.
Until today, police have always stressed that the McCanns were being spoken to as witnesses.
The latest developments have upset the McCanns' plans to return to their home in Rothley, Leicestershire, with their two-year-old twins Sean and Amelie on Sunday

The 17 key questions detectives may have asked Madeleine's mother

During 15 hours of questions, police put a series of key points to Kate McCann in their attempt to solve the Madeleine mystery. Sam Greenhill examines some of the likely demands detectives would have made of the 39-year-old GP in the interview room.

    Did you kill your daughter?

Mr and Mrs McCann have long been aware that they were the subject of rumour and suspicion but this is the first time the police have put it to them. Her friends and family cannot believe that the "imbecile" police have the nerve even to ask it.

Suspect: Kate McCann leaves the Policia Judiciaria - Portugal's CID - in Portimao after her second round of questioning

    Did you sedate Madeleine?

The couple have repeatedly denied using sedatives on their children to help them sleep at night while they went out. They have strongly rebutted accusations they accidentally gave her an overdose. There has been persistent speculation over why the couple's twin son and daughter slept soundly throughout the abduction and subsequent commotion once Madeleine was discovered missing. The McCanns say they have never used any kind of sedative on their children and never would.

Did you have any syringes in the apartment?

An astonishing claim in a Portuguese newspaper alleged that police think there could have been a tranquilliser kit used on Madeleine. Mrs McCann is believed to have fiercely rejected this, and the couple have stated there was no syringe in the apartment.

How much did you drink on the night?

Some reports have suggested the McCanns and their friends sank 14 bottles of wine at dinner that night, but they insist they got through no more than three bottles between nine adults.

Did you ever leave Madeleine all evening to go into town?

It was reported that a barman claimed he had seen the McCanns one evening in the town of Lagos, five miles away, although they insist they ate every night at the Ocean Club restaurant in Praia da Luz, and none of their friends has disputed this.

Who checked on the children and at what times, exactly?

Confusion has always surrounded the exact timings because no one was supposed to discuss the case or give a timeline in detail. From clues and comments pieced together over the past months, it appears the McCanns and their friends agree that Gerry checked at 9.05pm, friend Matthew Oldfield at 9.30pm (but he did not actually go into Madeleine's bedroom) and then Kate at 10pm. But detectives are interested in the period from 8pm when it is understood that no one apart from the McCanns saw Madeleine.

Did you ever leave her unattended for much longer than you claim?

Statements from witnesses near the apartment allegedly claim that in the evenings before her disappearance, Madeleine was heard crying for her parents for long periods. The McCanns deny this, saying they checked on their children regularly and are responsible parents.

Does your husband know about it?

Mrs McCann is likely to be invited to implicate her husband. The McCanns have always stood strong together and say the crisis has strengthened the bond between them, although Gerry did storm out of a TV interview recently leaving his wife behind when he was asked about the investigation.

Hire car: Police say they found Madeleine's blood in it

Does anyone else know? Do your friends know?

The idea that any of the McCanns' seven companions, some of them doctors, could have been involved in such a huge conspiracy and then convincingly maintained the secret is one of the most puzzling aspects of what appears to be the police's theory. Yet officers are focusing on alleged discrepancies in their statements.

Why did you shout: 'They've taken her, they've taken her!' after returning from Madeleine's room on the night of her disappearance?

These were the words Mrs McCann was reported to have screamed as she ran back to the restaurant table in a panic. The police were intrigued by her use of the word "they".

Why did a dog detect the smell of a corpse on your clothes?

A British dog trained to find dead bodies is alleged to have smelled something on Mrs McCann's jeans and T- shirt, and also on Madeleine's toy Cuddle Cat. Mrs McCann is believed to have replied that she came into contact with at least six dead people in her work as a GP in the period leading up to the holiday. Could Cuddle Cat, which she always holds close to her, have been contaminated from her clothes?

Papal visit: Benedict XVI blesses a photo of Madeleine

Why did you hire a car?

The McCanns did not hire a car until 25 days after Madeleine went missing. Until then, they did without one, apparently remaining in Praia da Luz or being driven around by police, embassy staff or friends. But in recent weeks, Mr McCann has regularly talked about using the hired silver Renault Scenic to ferry visiting friends and relatives to and from the airport in Faro.

Why did you hire it the day before going to see the Pope?

Detectives are puzzled why the McCanns needed to hire a car the day before they knew they would be leaving Portugal to fly to Rome. They did not need it to reach the airport as they were driven there by an aide. Yesterday the McCanns' spokesman said there was no significance in the date. The couple had arranged to hire a car and that was the day it had come through.

Did the hire car contain any of Madeleine's belongings?

If forensic evidence of Madeleine was found in the car, such as a hair, is there a legitimate explanation? Perhaps something belonging to her was later put in the car, for example when the McCanns moved to their new villa.

Could Madeleine have bled on something which was later put in the hire car?

Madeleine did slip and bang her leg, filmed on a family mobile phone video, as she boarded the holiday aircraft. Could she have shed blood on to some clothing which the McCanns later moved in the hire car?

Did you move Madeleine's body in your hire car?

Forensic evidence apparently points to Madeleine in the car. Mrs McCann strenuously denies any suggestion she moved any body.

Tell us what you did with her...

Mrs McCann was asked this directly, according to her husband's sister Philomena. Her reply was said to be: "You must be insane to think we'd put ourselves through this."

I hadn't seen this before, but the BBC is saying that sniffer dogs picked up the scent of a dead body in the apartment.

A British sniffer dog picked up the scent of a dead body in the apartment and samples, including suspected traces of blood, have been recovered from the scene.
A big boy did it and ran away.

The family is trying to spin this to say the Porguguese have bungled this case and are under huge pressure to deliver a perpetrator(s) so they are trying to pin it on the parents. The way the investigation has been handled does seem strange but that's the Portuguese system and there's no reason to think it's any more or less efficient than the one we are more familiar with. In any event, the police have the eyes of the whole world on them and they know they've been criticised for their 'incompetance' thus far so if they DO charge the parents they are going to make pretty damn sure it's a watertight case. This new forensic evidence appears to be the clincher.

And even if the parents are exonerated, the finger of suspicion will be pointed at them from now on unless someone else is caught and prosecuted and poor Maddy's remains are found. So whatever happens their careers as doctors are pretty much finished which is why they tried to stage this cover up in the first place IMO.

I don't think the police did a por job , I think they were overwhelmed by the media attention . I mean the parents played victim all over the world and one reporter topped the other with the poor, poor parents speach.

Exactly - it was their over-reaction that made people so suspicious in the first place. If they had behaved like normal, grieving parents and quietly returned home to care for their 2 other kids without this ongoing media frenzy they created around themselves then the would probably have got away with it.
