Madeleine McCann Case: London Police Target Three Burglars

In what is being called a breakthrough in a long and frustrating crime, British Metropolitan Police are said to be targeting three burglars for their possible involvement in the 2007 disappearance of British girl Madeleine McCann, who was snatched from her hotel room in the Portuguese town of Praia da Luz on May 3, 2007.

News about the trio, which was accompanied by reports that key arrests were finally imminent, followed a letter sent by the Crown Prosecution Services to authorities in Portugal on Friday, seeking permission to conduct interviews in connection with the case, reports CNN.

"The letter is a significant development. It is necessary for British police to request the Portuguese authorities allow them to operate on their turf," a spokesperson for Madeleine's parents, Kate and Gerry McCann, told the Mirror.

Pedro do Carmo, deputy national director of the Judiciary Police in Portugal, said the three people have yet to be detained. He also said Portuguese police have been in constant contact with law officials in the U.K.

This new bump in the case comes nearly three months after new computer-generated police sketches of potential suspects were released. Investigators also made a new public appeal on the BBC program Crimewatch, which aired in the U.K., the Netherlands and Germany.

And I wonder how long it'll take for these 3 to be exonerated too - like all the other suspects that the McCanns have commented on so far....

Hundreds of people and children go missing each day, let alone each year. Doesn't anybody wonder why this particular case and these particular parents keep getting all this media attention? It almost makes one think the police and Justice system is hoping that eventually they'll trip themselves up.

The British police have a history of using parents/suspects of missing children to make appeals etc so that they can study their behaviour. They have had some very good results. If I were a McCann I would not be happy that this has been passed to the British police. (IMO) one if not both if this couple are narcassistic-psychopath personality type, believing that they are much much smarter than the police involved. There are going to be some very red faces when they are tried & convicted of Maddy's death. I strongly believe this is why Richard Branson ended his close attachment to this couple/charity (he did an about face that was reasonably public); I think that he was warned that he'd been duped.

'Maddie's parents were guilty of child neglect': Lawyer's bizarre courtroom speech during case about mother who left her son, five, alone at night

    By Harriet Arkell

Defence lawyer Gareth Morgan compared them to his drink-driving client
The woman was over limit when she crashed on way back from cashpoint
He told Merthyr Tydfil magistrates McCanns left Maddie for much longer *true!*
His client, 44, who can't be named, admitted drink-driving and child neglect
She also admitted leaving an accident and was given 22-month driving ban
Friend of Kate and Gerry McCann said slur was 'offensive and inaccurate'
A lawyer defending a woman who was caught drink-driving while her small child was at home alone has accused Madeleine McCann's parents of child neglect.

In what has been described as an 'outrageous' slur on the missing girl's parents, defence lawyer Gareth Morgan compared them unfavourably to his client, who left her five-year-old son at home by himself before being arrested after she crashed her car at traffic lights.

He told magistrates at Merthyr Tydfil, south Wales: 'The parents of Madeleine McCann were guilty of child neglect for leaving their little girl much longer than my client. They were never prosecuted.'
*because they are portraying themselves as the victims of child abduction & it would not be sympathetic for the general public that believe them to prosecute them currently. Once her body is found they will throw the book at them & rightly so.*

Kate and Gerry McCann, pictured, were accused of child neglect by a lawyer defending a drink-driving mother
The lawyer said that his client, whose son has Asperger's, was ashamed of what she had done. The 44-year-old defendant, who cannot be named, hit the back of another car at traffic lights.

When police followed her home, she told them they couldn't arrest her because her son was by himself in the house, and they found the child asleep under a blanket on the sofa.

The court heard that the woman was more than two-and-a-half times over the limit when she drove to a cashpoint machine just before midnight. On her way home, she ran into a car driven by Bronnie-May Dunn, 21, which was stopped at traffic lights.

Miss Dunn suffered head injuries in the crash but magistrates heard that the driver shouted at her, saying it was her fault.

The woman admitted child neglect, drink-driving and leaving an accident and was given a 12-month supervision order, 120 hours of unpaid work, a 22-month driving ban and told to attend a course.

Today a friend of the McCanns, whose daughter went missing in Portugal in May 2007 while they ate in a nearby restaurant with friends, hit out at Mr Morgan's comments.

British police are hoping to go to Portugal to interview three new 'prime suspects' in the hunt for Madeleine, pictured
The friend told the Mirror: 'If Kate and Gerry were guilty of child neglect, and they were absolutely not, they would have been dealt with.

'As it is, there are two police inquiries in two different countries trying to find out what happened to Madeleine, and comments made by a lawyer in an unrelated case is offensive, outrageous and inaccurate.'

It was revealed today that Portuguese police are under mounting pressure to give British detectives access to the three 'prime suspects' wanted for questioning over the abduction of Madeleine McCann.

The Crown Prosecution Service has sent them a second 'International Letter of Request' after identifying three burglars who were operating in the Algarve resort where the McCanns were staying.

Analysis of mobile phone records at the time show that they made a high number of calls at around the time the small girl was taken.

It is now known that between January and May 2007 there had been a four-fold increase in the number of burglaries in the area around the Praia da Luz resort where the family from Rothley, Leicestershire, was staying.

Police said in October that in the 17 days before she disappeared there was one burglary and one attempted burglary in the block where the McCann family were staying.

I've always firmly believed that the McCann's know exactly what happened to their daughter and nothing I've read changes my mind. The problem is that as time passes whatever scanty evidence exists will be further obscured. The Portuguese cops bungled the whole investigation from the start and have been trying to cover it up ever since. I am 100% sure poor Maddy died that night but equally sure that unless there's a major breakthrough the people responsible will never be brought to justice.

Whenever I hear people say they're absolutely certain the parents are to blame, I remember Lindy Chamberlain.

I guess you weren't here during the Azaria circus - their "demeanour" is what got them both charged and convicted.

The thing is, kids do get abducted. From their homes, from hotels, off the street.

And compared to some of the recent child-disappearance cases here (Sky Metalwala, Caylee Anthony, Kieron Horman, Lisa Irwin, Ayla Reynolds, Haleigh Cummings, and on and on), the McCann's have been very forthcoming with investigators. Here, you have parents or guardians with way shakier stories, absolutely stonewalling investigators. And they are just as free and out on the street as the McCann's.

Especially if the parents are too busy getting drunk on holiday with their friends & too stupid to arrange the free babysitting service that the resort offers.

One night, on holidays, the adults, that is, the couples that I mentioned, were on a patio outside of the house where we were staying. We had been eating and drinking.

I was seated between Dave and Gerry who I believe were both speaking about Madeleine. I don't remember the conversation in its entirety, but it seemed they were discussing a possible scenario. I remember Dave telling Gerry something like "she", referring to Madeleine, "would do this".

When he mentioned "this", Dave was sucking on one of his fingers, pushing it inside and outside his mouth, while with the other hand he made a circle around his nipple, in a circulatory movement over his clothes. This was done in a provocative manner and carried an explicit insinuation in relation to what he was saying and doing.

I remember that I was shocked at this, and looked at Gerry, and also at Dave, to see their reactions. I looked around (page 4) as if saying "did anyone else hear this, or was it just me". There was a nervous silence registered in all the conversations and afterwards, everyone began talking again.

    Quote:
London: The expected arrests in the disappearance of Madeleine McCann that British media are calling imminent are being "overplayed," according to a former police detective with extensive experience of high-profile investigations.

"This isn't a major breakthrough. This is a significant piece of information about three individuals who need to be eliminated (from police investigations)," Mark Williams Thomas, who has won awards for his investigative reporting, said Tuesday.

"Burglars don't abduct children," Mr Thomas said. "Child abusers abduct, paedophiles abduct, but if you are in an area burglarising a house looking for items you are not looking to take a child. In terms of who these individuals are, they are likely to be questioned about what they may have seen as witnesses," he said.

"I doubt very much they will be viewed as suspects," Mr Thomas said. "To call them 'suspects' at this point is overplaying it by far."

Late Monday, several media outlets in the United Kingdom, including the Guardian and Daily Mirror, citing an unidentified spokesman for Kate and Gerry McCann -- Madeleine's parents -- reported that police in Portugal were ready to arrest and interview "key suspects" connected to alleged robberies in the area where the then 3-year-old Madeleine was taken in the case that has captivated global attention for years.

British investigators, who last year re-launched their own investigation into Madeleine's 2007 disappearance from a resort in Portugal, confirmed Monday they sent a letter of request to Portuguese authorities but would not elaborate on its contents.

Two of the burglaries took place in April 2007 in the apartment block where the McCann family was staying, ABC reported from London. In both of the April burglaries, entry was gained via a window. One theory is that Madeleine was also abducted after access to the family's vacation rental was gained through a window.

However, Mr Thomas, who as a police officer specialised in child protection cases, said Tuesday, "These individuals may have information but as far as a breakthrough? No." More importantly, he said, they need to be ruled out.

"What happens now is very much down to what the authorities in Portugal decide to do next," he said.
